Morva's police photo
BREAKING: A hostage situation is in progress at Virginia Tech's Squires Hall. An escaped felon and wanted murderer, William Morva, has at least one hostage (reports now indicate as many as three) in the student center of Virginia's second* largest state University. The Morva sighting at the Squires Student Center has been determined to be incorrect. Morva remains at large but, at this time, there is no hostage situation on Tech's campus. Previous reports to the contrary were erroneous. The campus has entered lockdown and Squires is being has been evacuated. No further details are available Further details below. Developing.
Background:
At 2:30 am on Sunday, August 20 William Morva overpowered a Montgomery Country Sheriff's deputy, took his weapon, shot an unarmed hospital security guard, and disappeared into the night. Local and State police from around the Commonwealth have converged upon Blacksburg and Christiansburg Virginia in what has become an all out manhunt for an escaped murderer.
The chase continued through Sunday with help continuing to pour in from around Virginia.
At 8:00 am Monday morning the stakes were suddenly raised. Virginia Polytechnic Institute's 24,000 students returned to classes after the end of the Summer recess and the man-hunt shifted into high gear.
Authorities have cordoned off a section of Virginia Tech's campus known as the Huckleberry trail – shutting down major access roads, setting up heavy barricades, and lining major roadways with officers armed with scoped rifles. Virginia Tech's Corporate Research Center, from which this author presently writes, is sitting squarely in the middle of the cordoned off area and is on high alert. Buildings are in total lockdown, companies are shut-down for the day, and those entering or exiting the area are subject to search.
At least one officer has been shot (but not killed) near the Huckleberry trail. Morva is no longer believed to be on the Huckleberry trail and is believed to be on Virginia Tech's main campus.
As many have noted, Morva has been apprehended by local police. He was picked up in the rugby field along Tech Center Drive, a roadway that links the main campus with the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center. The road runs through the area cordoned off by police, indicating that Morva has likely been contained in the area throughout the crisis. Several individuals have steped forward with differing accounts which place Morva in other locations throughout Blacksburg during the manhunt but none have yet been confirmed by police.
Around 1:00 pm local time the VT Corporate Research Center's (VT-CRC) staff began leaving the area. All roadways were blocked by police check points, typically consisting of two officers - both with weapons drawn and at the ready. Vehicles were searched carfully and completely and officers asked drivers and passengers for any information, causing traffic delays and congestion. Around 3:00 pm the VT-CRC asked all remaining staff to begin departing as convenient to prevent a massed traffic jam.
Morva was reaquired by police just before 4:00 pm, bringing the man hunt to an end.
With the news of the capture of William Charles Morva, I commend all the members of law enforcement involved in this effort. This was a joint operation that utilized all branches of law enforcement, and they have done their job well. -- The Roanoke Times
Wow... maybe you should change your handle to 'scoop-killfile' or something like that.
On a serious note, I will send thoughts of courage and calm to those people involved in this situation. Thanks for keeping us updated as it progresses.
There was a brief in the Collegiate Times with the following information
Virginia State Police have evacuated Squires in relation to the on the lose William Charles Morva. Morva is said to have a hostage according to the police scanner. The suspect was last seen running by Squires hall by a witness. Morva has been identified as a 24 year old white male. Much more of campus has been blocked off by barricades, and many students have been evacuated from classes on the first day of classes at Virginia Tech. Two police officers have been shot at this time. The first police officer is in stable condition, the second is unknown. The suspect is considered armed and dangerous.
Damn, this is a big deal. Are you on the ground there Killfile?
Thanks for keeping us updated, but on a more trivial note...
Virginia's largest state University
is not Virginia Tech... its George Mason. (at least based on population)
Yikes! I can only second merrydeath, in her thoughts of calm and courage. I assume you are able to keep in contact with your wife (assuming, because otherwise you would be panicked...)?
Do keep us updated.
Wow.. I can't find this anywhere else on the web.
So far the VT website hasn't mentioned any hostage situation but there is an advisory, roadblock, and cancelled classes.
Campus is closed. All students are requested to return to their dorms or apartments, as all campus buildings are in the process of being locked down.

Here are some of our local news sites... THey are all covering the story...
www.wdbj7.com
www.wsls.com
And The Roanoke Times: http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/79080
I'd like to echo the sentiments of others that have been so encouraging, and express how utterly impressed I am that in the face of something that would scare the living crap out of me, you had the presence of mind to come post about it on here. Kudos.
THIS JUST IN!!!!
The siting of the the shooter was never confirmed at squires hall. A press conference 2 minutes ago said that the last sighting was NOT there.... source, news channel 10 Local news... www.wsls.com
They havent posted it on their site yet... They came out breifly on the tv a moment ago and said that they have spotted him elsewhere... VT is still under careful watch as a precaution... As you can imagine things are pretty crazy with all the updates. I will keep running back and forth to the TV and try to keep you posted.
The Roanoke Times (my employer) is covering this story as well: http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/79080
Best coverage I have seen yet. Well done.
News Channel 10 (wsls.com) is saying now that the officer that was shot this morning has died. Thats two people this guy has killed. He broke free while being taken to the hospital yesterday, took the officers gun, shot a 21 year old security guard, and then shot this officer this morning. Officers name is Eric Sutphin.
Again, source news channel 10
Here is a Google Map of Monday's shooting (via The Roanoke Times)
The Roanoke Times seems to have the most thorough and up to date information for those of you trying to track the story. They're posting new information as soon as it can be confirmed.
Well wonderful. The tv stations are now showing "The Price is Right" and some soap operas. Wow. That takes priorty over a local shooter, on or near VT campus?! Give me a break...
Well there really isn't that much to report, and they've all covered it pretty thoroughly. I'm sure they'll cut in as more information becomes available. It just doesn't make sense for them to keep repeating the same information for the rest of the day.
Ture, I just hate soap operas. The Price is Right on the other hand....
and the story breaks on CNN 2 hours after first appearing on Newsvine.
Well, you know, it takes time to run the news through the government and military censors.
Perhaps I'm niave but I'm pretty sure that military censors don't really concern themselves with manhunts in rural southwest Virginia. They have better things to do with their time. Things like working to preserve the lives of hard working American soldiers and their families....
Yes, you're naive.
thanks so much for clarifying. The world finally makes sense... The reason why I have such a crappy life is because big brother is out to get me.... ya that's it...
Well, you know, it takes time to run the news through the government and military censors.
Not sure which is worse, the comment itself or the fact that it was voted up.
CNN is saying both the officer and hospital worked have died. This is such a tragedy.
Can you provide a link? Last I saw on CNN the officer was in stable condition.
Currently a security guard from a local hopsital and a police officer (Eric Sutphin) have been pronounced dead. A second officer is in stable condition after he was assualted by Morva.
More sad news. Apparently, the officer who died had left the force once because he was involved in a shooting, but returned because he felt a calling back to police work. The man had twin daughters who, I think, would be about 9-10 now. My deepest sympathies to the Sutphin family.
Here is a link to the article the roanoke times published when morva was arrested for the attempted robbery.
I would like to say that this is my first experience with newsvine. I have been very impressed. I went to digg first thing this morning to publish the news, only to see that someone else had already dont it. I appreciate everyones effort to keep this updated.
welcome to newsvine, unfortunately, as a new participant, your link won't show up. (something about making sure you're human and all that). I think this is the link you were posting.
Sorry, but it didnt post the link... Why?
it says links are omited....

Hopefully that will work...
Killfile, magnificent achievement. You will go down in history for this one. You have set the bar for excellence in real time reporting on Newsvine and maybe everywhere. This is an example of what one person can do with a little help from the Internet. There are rumors of group sites coming to Newsvine. This almost became one with the various comments feeding additional information. Kudos Killfile, Kudos.
Is it just me or does Morvo look incredibly young? He would blend in well at a university campus. Good thing he has left the area.
