Atheist student expelled two weeks before graduation for questioning classmate's belief in leprechauns

advertisement

"I jokingly asked her if she believed in leprechauns. It turns out, she does. They live on another energy layer," Averill wrote in notes to himself later that day. "In the interest of bringing my own view to the discussion, I began to ask her how she knew these things. Again I know all too well that people can be sensitive about their spiritual beliefs, so I was pretty much walking on glass as I did so."

According to an emailed letter from Engeldinger, Averill had violated the student conduct policy. The decision to dismiss Averill was "not the result of a single action on your part, but a series of actions. I believe that, in several instances, your actions have been aggressive, demeaning, and threatening and that this demonstrates a pattern of inappropriate and unacceptable behavior," Engeldinger wrote.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I'd like to believe that there's more to this than the article would seem in infer. I suspect we're only getting one side of the story - but Atheists are, as Dawkins is fond of pointing out, one of the last groups of people it's "ok" to discriminate against, marginalize, and generally heap scorn upon.

Well, atheists and homosexuals.

I was going to make a snide comment about how many Christians claim they are discriminated against, then I read

I expressed that I felt discriminated against as an atheist, and he informed me that mine was not a protected class of people

And suddenly it doesn't seem funny anymore.

I've seen members of each of thse groups be discriminated against, marginalized, and have scorn heaped upon them. Including Christians, and I'm sure any other religious group.

Which group it's acceptable to dump on really depends on where your standing at any given moment. It depends not only on which people are in front of you, but the time of day. Some people who are tolerant in one instance, will become intolerant in other because they have a different group of friends standing around them.

In this story, the headline " Atheist student expelled two weeks before graduation for questioning classmate's belief in leprechauns," is then specifically denied by the material you quoted. According to an emailed letter from Engeldinger, Averill had violated the student conduct policy. In other words, the school is at least stating that this was not the reason why. They might be lying, but I think your headline isn't necessarily accurate.

"He offered to re-admit me if I underwent—get this—psychiatric evaluation."

Wow.

I really hope there is more to this story, but if it really went down the way the article portrays it, that is @!$%#ing disturbing.

    Extremely disturbing, yet completely unsurprising.

Why do I forsee the ACLU getting a call from this kid's folks?

This guy posts on another forum I'm a member of, and over the course of him explaining what happened, prior to him going to the press and contacting the ACLU, it's become pretty clear he's a colossal douche.

While some of the things done by the administration are suspect, he had, until many of us questioned him further, left out a lot of important details, such as being asked to stop by the teacher. He originally claimed they were all part of a group project and working together, before admitting that he actually went out of his way to join the conversation. He's been disciplined several times previously for being an @!$%# to his teachers, and has been banned from the forum he currently posts on, for an extended period of time, because of his particular argumentative style (namely, being a total dick about it).

So yeah, his school might be run by anti-atheist pricks, but he is far from an innocent victim.

I was kinda hoping for some details like that...I'd rather think "that guy was an ass" then "humanity is full of asses" ;)
