When radio host Jerry Klein suggested that all Muslims in the United States should be identified with a crescent-shape tattoo or a distinctive arm band, the phone lines jammed instantly.

The first caller to the station in Washington said that Klein must be "off his rocker." The second congratulated him and added: "Not only do you tattoo them in the middle of their forehead but you ship them out of this country ... they are here to kill us."

Another said that tattoos, armbands and other identifying markers such as crescent marks on driver's licenses, passports and birth certificates did not go far enough. "What good is identifying them?" he asked. "You have to set up encampments like during World War Two with the Japanese and Germans."

This was ultimately a hoax; but the number of callers who agreed or who wanted to go further was something of a horror. Make no mistake, what happened in Germany during WWII was nothing unique to Germany, the Jews, or the Nazis. It could happen in America too. We are not so different from Germany 80 years ago.

That is so horrible!! I cannot believe people said the things they said. Special identification is exactly what the Nazis did in Germany to the Jews. It is outrageous! Makes me FUME!

That special identification was key to the perpetration of the holocaust. Of course you have to know who the Jews are before you can ship them off to camps. The Nazis forced the Jews to wear the star both so they could identify them when the "solution" became "final," but also because it allowed the systematic discrimination and dehumanization of the Jews.

That's important. You can't just ship a bunch of people off to camps, but the stars helped the Nazis convince the German people that the Jews weren't people -- they were something else.
