White House website is scrubbing embarrassing interviews (Updated: Interviews Present, Whitehouse Search Flawed)

advertisement

UPDATE: Looks like the blogger quoted below was wrong. The White House isn't scrubbing stories - it's just incapable of using a decent search engine.

On March 16, 2003 Dick Cheney went on Meet the Press. His absurd claims in that interview have since become politically embarrassing to the White House. For example, he declared...

I think things have gotten so bad inside Iraq, from the standpoint of the Iraqi people, my belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators.

You won't any longer find a link to this transcript on the White House website—nor, indeed, are there links to most of Cheney's interviews from before 2006. Don't believe me? Just do a search for that infamous sentence at www.whitehouse.gov.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I have to wonder how stupid they are if they think that taking transcripts off of the White House website is going to make them unavailable to reporters or the general public.

This is just "some guy's blog" so if anyone can find better confirmation of this beyond "I looked and can't find them" that would be awesome.

I searched for the phrase using the search built into whitehouse.gov, and came up with nada. But the search indexes on many sites that do their own are very poor. That is why I usually use Google to do a site search. For example, here's how I found the transcript in question.

By the way, one really cool thing about the Internet is that it isn't easy to cover your tracks. Not only do we have Google and other search engines, bloggers and YouTube, we also have the Wayback Machine, which keeps historical snapshots of huge portions of the web, including http://whitehouse.gov">whitehouse.gov going back to 1996.

For example, here's whitehouse.gov as it was on Dec 2, 1998. Besides seeing Bill Clinton and Al Gore, you'll also see whitehouse.gov wasn't any where as fancy as it is now — which is natural of course. The archive isn't perfect; sometimes when a link for that particular date points to a page that wasn't archived, it automatically takes you to the target page for the nearest day it has a copy. Pay attention to the URL, which includes the data of the snapshot.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work for Newsvine. All you can see is what the beta tester login page looked like back before launch.

i think that is one reason people keep suing google and the wayback machine.. it isnt about ownership of content or lose of advertising rev, it is all about embarrassment.

Exactly. Frankly, Newsvine's search sucks, but you don't need it because you can add "site:newsvine.com" to all your searches. Or use the Google Toolbar which has a site search button. Not only is the search faster, it even includes comments, which the Newsvine search does not.

You can also find the Whitehouse radio stuff the guy couldn't find: e.g. 2004, though it's linked incorrectly from the Radio page, probably a simple error.

This will get you Dec. 2004, for example. Other ones are linked correctly from that page.

so could it be that that whitehouse gang is just being a bit more subtle about hiding the embarrassing stuff.. say by taking the bits they feel are offensive out of the search engine?

when it comes to deception and manipulation, it seems that the those boys are indeed good at what they do.

I doubt it, tschreck. First off, the interview is in the index, it just appears that only the title rather than the content is indexed, which is why the blogger didn't find it. Not indexing content isn't a very effective way of hiding embarrassing stuff, because anyone searching for a specific phrase implies they already know the phrase.

The blogger clearly jumped to a biased conclusion. I agree with Steve's sentiment.

tschreck, I think your question was a legitimate one — it crossed my mind too. But I think it is a sad sign (please don't take this personally) that your comment has received more votes than mine where I prove the blogger's claim as false. I don't trust the Bush administration, but what's the difference between the Bush administration and pro-war American's seeing concluding Iraq had WMDs on flimsy evidence and left-wing Americans concluding that the blogger's claim above must be true?

vas my friend, i have long given up as to why some comments are more popular than others.

the fact that goreporters stats have improved even though the quality of work can't get any worse leads me to think the system is somewhat broken.

eh in the the big picture it matters little..

vas my friend

Ah... thanks! You made me feel better, my friend. I was worried you'd interpret my remarks.

eh in the the big picture it matters little..

Oh, I don't care about the votes as it affects me personally... What I cared about was what the votes represented. Your comment, which I think was a fair one, had/has the highest number of votes -- which is an indication to me of such a great eagerness for the bloggers claim to be true that after concrete evidence to discredit the blogger's conspiracy theory is presented, it is the new counter-counter-theory that that gets the most votes. See Steve's comment below.

That said, perhaps I in my eagerness to expose liberals who resort to the same behavior as our opponents (because they ultimately hurt our cause more than they help) that I read too much into such a small amount of votes :)

Maybe they aren't removing articles but I saw an article on newsvine a while back that exposed the Whitehouse site of modifiying the infamous speech that George Bush gave on the aircraft carrier while wearing a flight jacket.

The article gave a before shot of the video with the "Mission Accomplished" banner clearly depicted in the background. The video has since been cropped so that the the banner could no longer be seen in the background.

Here is the original article http://redruby.newsvine.com/_news/2006/11/07/431573-white-house-caught-doctoring-mission-accomplished-video

Vas: That link is not to the interview from 2003. It's to an interview from 2006 in which a videotape is played from part of the 2003 interview.

You're right. But why would they hide a transcript of the original interview, but leave up the ones where Cheney is directly confronted with the how wrong he was?

I verified that whitehouse.gov does not have the March 16, 2003 Meet the Press transcript on its site, but neither does MSNBC.com, which only goes back to Aug 2003. So my gut says we're all wasting our time here. I've put non-trivial amount of time into this already, mainly because promoting rational discourse is important, and though I don't have the time to counter every left-wing conspiracy theory (honestly, I'd rather be countering right-wing ones), I have to do so once in a while to keep honest and to set an example.

I may be wrong. But if anyone really feels that something is fishy going, despite evidence to the contrary, please spend some time to do some actual research! Cheers.
