Westboro Baptist Church Will Protest The Funerals of Slain VT Students

advertisement

WBC will preach at the funerals of the Virginia Tech students killed on campus during a shooting rampage April 16, 2007. You describe this as monumental horror, but you know nothing of horror -- yet. Your bloody tyrant Bush says he is 'horrified' by it all. You know nothing of horror -- yet. Your true horror is coming. "They shall also gird themselves with sackloth, and horror shall cover them; and shame shall be upon all faces, and baldness upon all their heads" (Eze. 7:18).

Why did this happen, you ask? It's simple. Your military chose to shoot at the servants of God today, and all they got for their effort was terror. Then, the LORD your God sent a crazed madman to shoot at your children. Was God asleep while this took place? Was He on vacation? Of course not. He willed this to happen to punish you for assailing His servants.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

They have the constitutional right to say it -- maybe not at the funeral itself -- but they have the right to say it.

I have the right to weep in anger and frustration that anyone would say such a thing.

I'm not seeding this because I agree with it. I'm seeding it because, if they should actually show up, it's better if the world knows they're coming.

Killfile, when WBC came to our campus to protest there was a strong turnout for anti-protestors - we formed a wall of silence I believe and literally shielded people from seeing them.

Does nothing to deal with the hate they speak, though. If I can find more details about the UM efforts when I get home, i'll mail them to you.

Ryan, that's exactly the appropriate way to deal with these kinds of people. Trying to shout them down only encourages them. It's always better just to make them easy to ignore, make them feel irrelevant and small.

What I dont get is even if these people were right, even if God sent this man to kill their children, why is it wrong for the families to mourn in peace?

Let them preach all they want about their god sending crazy 23 year olds to kill others - but let the families have the few moments of peace they can possibly manage.

This Westboro Baptist Church is so messed up I am truly ashamed that they consider themselves Christians. Because if that were what truly being a Christian is about, I want no part of it. Fortunate for me I know what being a true Christian is, and that as a Christian I am to follow Christ's teachings, which all center around love. This is clearly a foreign concept to the members of this "church."

What really angers me is that most of the rest of the Christian community seems to just let them be. I think we should stand up to them and rebuke them, not that it will make them change from their ignorant ways, but at least it will send the message to the world that real Christians do not believe what the WBC believes.

Jonathan -- Right on. These folks quote the Bible, but they don't really seem to be living it.

I'm a Christian.

I believe that our president is very, very wrong and is out of control. I know that our country is way messed up. I know that our world is way messed up.

But I certainly don't feel joyful when something terrible happens because it is "God's judgement". I would rather see our president come back under the rule of law, be removed from power in a peaceful manner that complies with our laws, and see our country and world be restored through love and real concern for our fellow humans.

Protest yes, but beyond that, within the Baptist denomination there is not much more that can be done. Unlike Catholic, and some other groups, each Baptist church is independent from another, and acts on its own accord (up to a point though, when it comes to Biblical teachings and beliefs.) This is why there are so many splintered Baptist offshoots.

The closest parallel I can think of to these loonies is the Lyndon La Rouche cult, which started out as far leftist during the Viet Nam era, then swung hard right to virulent anti-Communism in the Reagan era, and now seems to have gone back to Marx, with a swing by musicology along the way to advocate for establishing the A above middle C at 440 hz. No matter what they're spouting, you can recognize them by the pitch of their voices, the contorted, rage-filled faces, and the ad hominems they're screaming against anyone who happens to oppose their cause du jour.

The WBC started out tormenting families who had lost relatives to AIDS or gay-bashing, but now that AIDS drugs are more effective and the disease is a chronic health problem rather than a death sentence, they've felt a lack of victims, and so have targeted the U.S. military, for fighting for a country that doesn't condemn gays venomously enough, and now the families of the massacre victims. It should be obvious by now that what they really want isn't universal heterosexuality, or a victory in the culture wars, however they may define that, or even the establishment of a theocratic government in this country, but an excuse to hurt vulnerable people and try to provoke fights. Sooner or later, they will get what they asked for, and more of it than they expected.

Unfortunately, "religions" of this kind have a wonderfully hypocritical system in place to handle that system. The slain, who, since they were a member of the correct church, were obviously righteous people, and they then become martyrs, held up as an example, and the situation only gets worse. Violence only begets more violence.

I think we can all agree that what they plan to do is a terrible act that will cause unforgivable anguish to the families of the victims. However, if the families can someone ignore these assualts, they can take solace in the fact that the WBC is in reality a fairly insignificant organization. Most outside estimates place their numbers at under 100, mostly blood relatives with a handful of outsiders who married into the family. Although the inner workings of the family is not fully known, it is suspected that there has been inbreeding, or at least very questionable breeding between the members.

Their beliefs are rather unorthodox, even compared to radical Baptists, so it's hard to entrust any other religious group with the job of denouncing them. They are truly in a category by themselves. There doesn't even seem to be any logic to their doctrine, except that pretty much everyone not affiliated with WBC is going to hell. Specifically, they've targeted Matthew Sheppard, 9/11 victims, US Soldiers killed in Iraq, and the miners who died in Kentucky. I know it's probably not much comfort to the families of the VT victims, but the WBC is frankly just insane.

I don't think these people represent the entire Christian Right. I mean, I guess you'd have to consider them to be Christians, but their message doesn't seen to be any more consistent with Christianity than, say, Osama Bin Laden's message is with Islam. Also, they're clearly conservative in their views, but I don't think most conservatives are nearly as closeminded as these people. Anyone who claims that WBC is representative of Christians in general, or representative of Christian conservatives, is making a serious mistake as far as I can tell.

That's a great observation/question, e_nygma. I'm no expert on Christianity, just as I'm not an expert on Islam. If Osama Bin Laden is considered to be a Muslim even though, to borrow a phrase, his actions basically contradict the tenets of his religion, wouldn't these people have to be considered Christians? I mean, they say they're Christians, and they claim to be following their interpretation of the Bible. I suspect that they would probably interpret Christ's teachings in a different way than most Christians - who decides whether someone is Christian or not? Who decides whether someone is Muslim or not?

It might be. I don't think the WBC guys are likely to start planning violent acts of terrorism anytime soon, but you never know - I suspect that Bin Laden and Al Qaeda probably had a phase at some point when their actions were no more dangerous than Phelps and WBC are now. You know, back when they first noticed how "dangerous" western influence was on Muslim culture, but before they decided that the best way to prevent that influence from "ruining their religion" was to violently force westerners out of the region. If the WBC were to follow the same path, it might just be a matter of time before we start talking more about "violent Christian extremist groups."

I know that, but these people are certainly not following the teachings of Christianity. Unfortunately all you have to do is say that you're a Christian and it reflects on the entire religion.

The craziest part is that Jesus taught so firmly against hypocrisy. It's all over the bible.

            Don't pray in public.
Don't be a wolf in sheeps clothing.
Before you can take the speck out of your neighbor's eye, you must take it out of your own.

It goes on and on. I very much respect the authentic message of Christianity, but human beings are fallible. This is not justification, it is simply the truth.

Rejecting something due to the hypocrisy of its followers is, in my opinion, a silly reason. I'm willing to bet that 99.99% of those who reject Christianity b/c of hypocrisy in the church are also guilty of being a hypocrite at some point in their lives.

Christianity, as it was intended, is not a following of Christians, but rather a following of Jesus Christ.

Munzilla- you are correct. It saddens me that people cheapen such a beautiful way of life by the vile course in which they live theirs.

            D.M. Walters- Agreed.

DamianKD- You are correct. The validity of Christianity has nothing to do with its followers, and everything to do with who you are to follow (Jesus Christ).

The stories you will not hear from this tragedy are the ones of the droves of devout Christians who were there to counsel, comfort, and grieve with the victims of this event. Sadly, the careless words of a few drown out the loving deeds of others.

It's possible for any group, be it Westboro Baptist Church or Al Qaeda, to twist the teachings of religion to justify hateful and misguided behavior. We in the west are pretty good at differentiating the people who pervert Christianity, and pretty quick to understand that a few kooks don't necessarily speak for an entire religion, but we often seem to be less capable of recognizing the same phenomenon when it occurs in other religions.

The thought of these sick fs protesting at the funerals of innocent souls slaughtered in cold blood by a psychopath makes me physically ill. They are NOT true Christians in any way, shape or form. They are just as sick and twisted as that murderer, but even more dangerous. Invoke the name of God and throw in a grain of truth in the middle of the madness, and you'll fool alot of stupid people. Evil does exist and it comes in many disguises. If these guys were muslims, they would be dead already..
extremists suck no matter what name they use for God.

Out of everything in life, not much more is due the respect and privacy of a funeral.
There are many people i dispise but i wouldnt not even interupt Dick Cheneys funeral.

I am against all the exclusionary freedom of speech laws, but to me funerals are private parties on private property and these people should be banned from attending. I knnow that is harsh to say in america. And i dont have a problem with this nut jobs saying what ever they want.. but not at funerals.

What sickens me even more, they simply use the funerals for this post... they use the dead, suffering and morning, to get on the news. Noone would even listen to them if they picketed outside the WH, sad but true.. even sadder to say "hey i have an idea.. lets protest at funerals"
See if i was their reverend, i would have done it naked.. still get the news and people dont quite hate you as much.. ok maybe not with me naked.. but still better than funerals.

smallfire- yes, there is a group that acts as a shield for the families at these funerals the WBC shows up to. Patriot Guard Riders.

            patriotguard -dot- org
This is their website, I'm not sure if they'll go to the VT memorials, because their purpose is generally to honor soldiers. I can tell you, however, that's it's one of the most amazing things you'll ever see. I went to join them when they showed up at a local funeral, because the WBC was planning on attending. The sight of a couple hundred flag bearing people walking silently and lining the street is pretty amazing... it was a very cold day, and everyone stood silently while the family and friends went into the church, waited the couple of hours for the service to end, and remained standing as all the family and friends left. They got a few appreciative nods from the family (they only go at the family's request) and it was pretty moving to think that all these people would travel and spend a very cold saturday standing outside to honor someone they never even met. Thankfully, the WBC didn't even show up, but if they had, there's no way the family ever would've known.
