Before Kathy Griffin won a creative arts Emmy last weekend for her reality show, "My Life on the D-List," she joked that an award would move her to the C-list. She was right: "C" as in censored. The TV academy said her raucous acceptance speech will be edited when the event, which was taped, is shown Saturday on the E! channel.
ADVERTISEMENTThe main prime-time Emmy Awards air the next night on Fox.
"Kathy Griffin's offensive remarks will not be part of the E! telecast on Saturday night," the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said in a statement Monday.
In her speech, Griffin said that "a lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus."
She went on to hold up her Emmy, make an off-color remark about Christ and proclaim, "This award is my god now!"
The comedian's remarks were condemned Monday by Catholic League President Bill Donohue, who called them a "vulgar, in-your-face brand of hate speech."
Wait.... I thought that Christianity was the last religion it's ok to mock, hate, and ridicule. We keep hearing that, how the "Liberal Media" protects Islam, doesn't criticize Islam, censors speech critical of Islam but rags on, mocks, and attacks Christians all the time....
In her speech, Griffin said that "a lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus."
Whatever, Killfile.
I say she should be exposed to the public as who she is portraying herself to be.
Her career depends on the adoration of her audience.
Let her have her say.
We'll see how much public agreement she can muster..........
She's offensive. That's her style. It's worked pretty well for her thus-far.
I've seen some polls on this, although they are online non-scientific polls, but so far I've seen nothing but overwhelming support for not censoring her. I don't think this is offensive, and it's just people overreacting about nothing. Personally I think Bill Donahue is just looking for something to get mad about these days.
#2: Her career depends on the adoration of her audience.
adoration? do people actually care about this comedy hack?
i agree that she should be censored, but not because of what she said, i just don't think she's funny.
but in all seriousness, when a comedienne sells their soul to E!, i don't feel bad for any type of censorship that occurs. that's the price you pay for exposure.
Chud -- I don't disagree that E! has the right to cut what they like. I simply want to point out the following:
Any time you ever see anyone make a comment, produce a piece of artwork, or otherwise speak in a manner that isn't entirely reverent of Christ, Christianity, and Holy Mother Church the "Oh my God Christians are soooooo, like, persecuted in this country" crowd chimes in with how the media self-censors when it comes to Islam but likes to piss all over Christianity because it (the Media) is filled with Left-Wingers who hate conservatives and Christianity.
I just want to take this moment, and this story to very loudly assert the opposite. Behold! There is no vast Left Wing Conspiracy involved. If there were, we wouldn't be reading about E!'s decision to censor Griffin.
does E! count as media though?
does hollywood handing out popularity contests count as newsworthy?
i've got a new channel for you then:
E! Infotainment PropogaNews
worthless distractions for the masses and their consumption habits
E! counts as media. Tabloid media maybe... but media. It's owned by Comcast for what it's worth.
Killfile:
While I understand the point you are trying to make with this story, I think your point comes up a little short.
When it comes down to it, I don't think there is a vast Left Wing Conspiracy involved
, but I do feel the media is much more likely to censor anti-Islamic comments before it censors anti-Christianity comments.
I think that E!'s decision to censor those comments on a cable channel - which enjoys a much greater freedom of action than broadcast - does constitute something significant.
No, they're not news media. No, they're not of the scope and scale as CNN or the like, but they are media.
By definition we don't hear about censored stories all that much. This is an example of rebroadcast and I disagree with the word "Censor" here but it's how the article phrased it so we'll let it go.
My point is that I think the whole "the media is more likely to block/prevent/censor criticism of Islam than Christianity" is largely crap. I think you see more criticism of Islam because Islam is so strongly tied with things like suicide bombings and the Iraq war whereas Christianity is - for the most part - not. I think you see media outlets blocking some of that critique, but that you're not seeing substantively more blockage as a percentage of material generated. I also think that you're seeing people with an agenda make the rare profaning of Christian ideals and ideas "news" when its not and then making the protection of Islamic ideals and ideas "news" when it's also not.
Think about how tightly Islam is tied with suicide bombings, with terrorism, with totalitarianism, with fear, war, and persecution.
Think about Christianity......
Now really, which one is really the subject of more of the media's wrath?
This article is just an example -- and a catalyst for discussion.
but I do feel the media is much more likely to censor anti-Islamic comments before it censors anti-Christianity comments.
lol you oviously don't own a tv
my panasonic television has a liberal bias
i agree that she should be censored, but not because of what she said, i just don't think she's funny.
Interesting viewpoint you got there. So I guess the mass media has to pass "The Chud Test" before airing anything. Huh.. a country of one. Chudland
@ 2.11
i prefer chudtopia thank you very much...
that too was a joke (i do tell them from time to time), but honestly what do you expect from corporate media? fairness and freedom? they just want to cover their asses from the fallout of pissed off board members and shareholders. its their fiduciary responsibility to censor and thats why corporate powers should get out of our media!
The comedian's remarks were condemned Monday by Catholic League President Bill Donohue, who called them a "vulgar, in-your-face brand of hate speech."
Bill Donohue is a well-known asshat. Since the remarks were censored, we will never know if they were specifically anti-Catholic.
Kathy Griffin is one of the quickest comedic wits I've ever seen. She consciously chooses to shock sometimes and sometimes that is what her audiences expect of her.
If it were Sara Silverman, we would just say she was "in character."
Well no -- see the Emmy broadcast was live. Then people like Bill Donohue got their panties in a knot over the whole "Jesus had nothing to do with this" comment and "this award is my god now" line and now E! will have to bleep her out during the rebroadcast.
We know exactly what the comments were. They had nothing to do with Catholicism.
As I didn't see the live broadcast, I have no idea what the unedited comments were. Guess I'll have to find it on YouTube or MetaCafe. The stories I've read about it have only snippets of her comments.
Personally, even though these comments are not her funniest, I think she is capable of very funny material.
As for offensive, let's go back to Sara Silverman and her impression of Britney Spears' genitalia on the MTV awards show. Ewwwww!
I think that what got everyone up in arms was when she said something to the effect of, "suck it, Jesus!"
Personally, I'm offended by 90% of what this Administration has done (probably because I'm unaware of the other 10%). Can someone censor W and his crew?
Chum - I know there is a tendency to conflate Bush with Christianity but Bush and crowd are not representatives of Christians. Even if they were I still think it is a bad idea to allow hate speech in the guise of entertainment. I don't know of any group, ethnic, racial or religious that finds it amusing when it is directed at them. That said I am totally on board with your disgust with W and crowd.
I think censorship is a slippery slope.
Admittedly, I'm not too concerned about religion in general. Personally, I try not to offend others, but the entertainment business seems to thrive on it. With that said, I don't think that anyone would even have noticed her remarks if they hadn't been censored.
I think that there are plenty of real issues that are much more important than this, and I find it appalling that this is getting as much attention as the Jena 6 or Darfur.
Personally, I'm offended by 90% of what this Administration has done (probably because I'm unaware of the other 10%). Can someone censor W and his crew?
whoa
the place started spinning right at the above quoted moment.
I am learning that any topic of discussion can be twisted without warning into a political diatribe.
Yes, the political is personal. My point was that many people are offended by different things, and censoring offensive material can lead down a road we may not want to be on. And if you think that was a diatribe...
Killfile, please delete my comments if you feel that that they are too far off-topic. Or a diatribe.
If "offensive" is enough to bleep out someone's words Chum, then what offends you is more than relevant to this thread.
This is hate speech? These poor people...
Watch it man, you're starting to border on it now yourself ...
I can't feel bad for people that consider things of this nature hate speech?
What is Pat Robertsons prayer for Hugo Chavez if this is hate?
Um, I was just being sarcastic.
I really hate it when that doesn't come across...I've just about given up using sarcasm without pointing it out (which detracts from it).
I find this to be neither offensive or insulting. She makes a valid point.
If you were to reverse this, you would find any remark thanking Jesus for anything to be offensive to any non-Christian.
I think that, at 2011 years old, Jesus is old enough to fight his own battles, and doesn't need morons like Mr. Donohue sticking their oh-so-sensitive noses in where they're not invited. The insult was aimed squarely at Jesus himself, and if he finds it to be offensive or hateful, then he needs to take it up with Ms. Griffin directly. I mean... he's one third of the Holy Trinity, for Christ's sake! Why in god's name does he need some puny mortal nobody to stick up for him? Do you think if Thor were annoyed he'd go and get some Viking to do his dirty business? Hell no! If it bugged him, he'd toss a lightning bolt and that bimbo would be a sauteed carrot-top, served to the Valkyries for dinner. How is Jesus ever going to get any respect if he just hides somewhere over the rainbow doing an imitation of the Cowardly Lion? I say broadcast it often and lets see what kind of a man he really is.
think that, at 2011 years old, Jesus is old enough to fight his own battles,
To a large extent I agree with this.
He is in fact :
I mean... he's one third of the Holy Trinity
He really IS all that.
And I think that this is between this woman and Him.
I have no urge to argue with her.
She can either find the guts to spout that to His face or repent.
But where we supporters of the entertainment industry are concerned, I want to know who people are before I support their lives with my dough.
And as for the people televising, we'll it's kinda like what was said about Imus.
The broadcasters are paying the bills and they get to say how far they are willing to push their audiences.
She can either find the guts to spout that to His face
Dude, you know where he is?
I'd love to see what he actually looks like.
I think it's funny. It shows how people take things way too seriously, she's a comedian! I think Kathy Griffin is awesome, I've never felt offended by something she's said, and I'm a Christian myself.
Anti-Christian is inaccurate, or at least selective. Jesus is part of Islam, and some other religions. Anti-Christ for sure, but telling mythical characters they can suck it doesn't seem to warrant censorship. For the record, Jesus can suck it, and so can Hercules. The Greek pagans are up in arms right now. They can blow me. Newsvine is my God now!
Right, but the decision to censor was based upon Christian objections.
Huh. I actually think her remarks aren't necessarily funny, but they are fairly accurate. I've seen plenty of people get up and thank Jesus and/or God for their award and I frequently think that God had nothing to do with it because of whatever they were receiving the award for. I don't think that her speech should have been censored for being honest. Seriously.
What is so offensive? All day long I look at stupid "Jesus" fish on poeple's cars. Christians are always throwing their beliefs in everyone's face.
Religion is the most eggregious form of human self aggrandizement. Jews are "chosen", Christians are "made in god's image" and Muslims are "soldiers of god". What an ego-maniacal load of s&*t! Atheism requires true humility.
I have an atheistic sticker on my car. I wonder if the day will come when some "good christian" will try to drag me from my car and kick my a@@. 'Cause it's the christian thing to do...LOL!
No the Christian thing would be to try to convert you or kill you if they are unsuccessful. Just basing my statement on history :)
I like Kathy Griffin she should be able to say what she wants. All the people @!$%#ing and censoring are just giving her more publicity.
Get over yourselves already.
How can you not consider this offensive towards Christians? If you someone told YOU to suck it, you'd be pissed off. I believe in freedom of speech but I also believe in having respect for others. Whatever happened to "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." She knew she was going to offend people before she said it. That makes it hate speech. She offended half the country, just to try to get the other half to laugh. Wonder what would've happened if she'd called some one a nappy headed ho? Or maybe used the "n" word. Her already pathetic career would've been over but insulting Jesus is okay because it suddenly becomes a freedom of speech issue instead. Yes, she should be censored because she was disrespectful to not only Christians, but to people who don't want to hear her profanity in the first place whether they believe in God or not. I mean good grief, you can't even watch an awards show without hearing offensive language and her claiming that her award is her new god for her the son of God to "suck it." SHe's definitely not a lady and shows no self respect or respect for others.
She knew she was going to offend people before she said it. That makes it hate speech.
No it doesn't. Quoth Wikipedia:
Hate speech is a controversial term for speech intended to degrade, intimidate, or incite violence or prejudicial action against a person or group of people based on their race, gender, age, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, language ability, moral or political views, socioeconomic class, occupation or appearance (such as height, weight, and hair color), mental capacity and any other distinction-liability. The term covers written as well as oral communication and some forms of behaviors in a public setting. It is also sometimes called antilocution and is the first point on Allport's scale which measures prejudice in a society.
Do you consider "suck it Jesus" a compliment towards Jesus? Of course not. (that's degrading) To offend Jesus, is to offend those who love him. (prejudicial against religion) It's just the same as if someone offends your loved one, it offends you. It gets you riled up and your reaction is to defend. (Incites violence) Now, I don't think anyone should harm Kathy Griffin because she said something stupid, but it still makes Christians feel like they need to defend their God. If They sat here and just ignored it, eventually Christians would lose all their rights, just to pacify others. Atheist's want to say Christians whine and claim they're being persecuted all the time. Why don't you research other countries and then you'll see that this is one of the last countries left were Christians aren't being murdered just because they're Christians. It's the fact that we know what is happening everywhere else, that makes us fight to defend our Lord here in the U.S.
Why is THIS a freedoms issue when our 10 commandments were taken down all across America and nobody was even saying it out loud. Athiests had the option to READ it or not and they were STILL offended. But we're not allowed to be offended when she says what she did? If Kathy Griffin didn't want to start controversy, then she shouldn't have insulted the larger percent of America.
So what you're saying is that if someone insults Jesus it drives Christians to acts of violence?
Either you're misunderstanding what "incites violence" means or I need to keep you around as my canned counterexample when people say that there's something exclusively wrong with Islam and point to the reaction to the no-infamous cartoons as an example.
To offend Jesus, is to offend those who love him. (prejudicial against religion)
It's not prejudicial. Rather, I'd argue that someone not treating Christianity with silken kid gloves is a sign of lack of prejudice.
She's, at most, ridiculing a belief. It's up to Christians to decide to ascribe to that belief, and to define themselves by it.
Now, I don't think anyone should harm Kathy Griffin because she said something stupid, but it still makes Christians feel like they need to defend their God.
The Almighty creator of the Universe needs defending from a D-list comedian?
That is truly sad.
Why is THIS a freedoms issue when our 10 commandments were taken down all across America and nobody was even saying it out loud.
When blathering on, at least know your blather. The Ten Commandments were taken from a number of publicly funded, government buildings because it constituted a government endorsement of a particular religion, and violated the separation of church and state.
Why don't you research other countries and then you'll see that this is one of the last countries left were Christians aren't being murdered just because they're Christians.
Christians somewhere out there are victims of hate crimes, so they're now a po' wittle persecuted group? Get a grip. Every religious and ethnic group has hate crimes committed against them somewhere out there.
She may have had a bottle o' Coca-Cola wi' a straw hidden behind th' podium, and invited Jesus to suck it. Even Jesus loves a cool, refreshin' bottle o' Coca-Cola. 'Tis the real thing, y'know.
Bottom line is, she was asking for trouble. Violence doesn't HAVE to be the outcome, but it is always a possibility when someone is deliberately being insulted to their face on national TV. It isn't the Christian way to hurt people, but you can't deny that we're only human like everyone else and when you're provoked, well the outcome depends on how much more you get pushed. Of course it's not like anybody is saying she should be stoned to death. Just apologize for being indecent. What I don't understand is why this guy on the medical show (the name escapes me) gets his career ruined for calling someone a fag, another gets his career ruined for calling someone a nappy headed ho and another is being tormented on stage by hecklers and he used the 'N" word (yes, I think all of those things were horrible) and their careers are ruined but this woman is being treated like a hero to Athiests. I wish Christians WOULD be as outspoken as the athiests and stand up for what they believe in as passionately as those who stand up for what they DONT believe in. I guess that's just how it is now in America. I don't even know what cartoons you're talking about by the way.
First of all, she's far from a big hero to atheists. You need to get out more if you think that's the case.
Secondly, she mocked a religious icon, not people. If she said "Suck it, Zeus!", I'd wager $20 that we wouldn't hear a peep out of you.
I wish Christians WOULD be as outspoken as the athiests and stand up for what they believe in as passionately as those who stand up for what they DONT believe in.
And they're not doing this?! Christians have been oppressively "outspoken" for centuries.
I don't even know what cartoons you're talking about by the way.
Yeah. You do need to get out more.
If she said "Suck it, Zeus!",
Zeus would've actually sucked it. He's incorrigible like that, y'know?
Zorro - you've yet to leave a worthwhile comment here. Cursing, insulting me and others in this community, and otherwise slinging venom and fury about do not - if you're unclear - constitute a "worthwhile comment."
I'll continue to delete your comments until they improve.
Can someone just ban this Zorro character?
Done.
Ah delicious irony.
I am very surprised this is the first time I have seen anything like this here. I guess that's what separates Newsvine from the rest of the internet...
He's already tried to come back.
He's an angry human being it seems. Out to "own" the lefty blog-o-sphere.
Maybe he should talk to Jesus about his comments.
There's so much hatred and spite in the world now. I don't lash out to intentionally hurt others who are Christians, but they lash out at us on TV in front of the whole country and we're viewed as being whiny? I'm not whining, I'm worried. I don't think it's going to be long before we're all going to have a very hard life. Our own Government sold us out, they're tazing (spelling?) us left and right, our schools are full of pedophiles and we can't even get along enough to help each other out in times of need. Well, I'm gonna pray for all of us. I read the news daily because I am a news junky and I see every single day a new article where Jesus is being Mocked. People are so uneducated these days that they even believe that Allah and God are one and the same which is not true, Allah is the Pagan moon god and so they lump Christians into the same catagory. Christian or not, did you read the freakin news today??? We're all in trouble but I take comfort in knowing that I have a book full of prophecies (which all up to this point have come true) and God to pray to. I believe he hears me. Whether you believe it or not doesn't really matter to me. It did for a minute, now there's a whole lot more to think about besides you.
God bless,
Rebecca
Becky, tell us, please, can ye get away fr'm th' monsters who've programmed ye so cruelly?! Tell us yer location so we can call th' sheriff or an embassy employee. Is there a village nearby that will take ye in or alert th' authorities? And f'r heaven's sake, have ye drunk th' Kool-Aid yet? Saints presarve us, Becky, please! Tell us that ye've not drunk th' Kool-Aid yet!!
I'm not whining, I'm worried. I don't think it's going to be long before we're all going to have a very hard life.
Yeah, man. If Griffin doesn't just shut up, we're totally gonna have a doggone hard life. Why? Because Griffin's comment is just like trigger-happy police tasing.
and we can't even get along enough to help each other out in times of need.
Yeah, we're too busy whining about, or rather "defending Christianity against", Kathy Griffin.
People are so uneducated these days that they even believe that Allah and God are one and the same which is not true, Allah is the Pagan moon god and so they lump Christians into the same catagory.
Ah yes, because Christmas and Easter definitely weren't adjusted to coincide with pagan holidays to protect Christians, right?
As for prophecies, which one have come true? Are there any that predicted anything actually outside of writings in religious texts? Otherwise, it's all awfully convenient.
As for prophecies, which one have come true?
"And behold, th' lion shall lie down with th' lamb and they shall produce an ass, an' th' ass shall lead them all."
Who knew th' prophets were talkin' about th' election of 2000?
This news site is pathetic. This is how you treat guests who come here from links on REAL news sights. You have proved my point. Christians can't defend their religion anymore without getting this kind of treatment. I wasn't here to start trouble. My responses should've told you that. I never once said anything rude to anyone. I had no desire to. You have a lot of hate in you little man. I think you need a nap and maybe a diaper change as well. I don't know where you think I'm from, but nobody talks like that here. You just sound like a fool. You should take your lips off your mother tit and take a good look around you and see what's really happening in the world today little man.
Ye warn't defendin' yer religion, sweetheart, ye were calumnizin' everywan else's. 'Tis a big difference. Stop dhrinkin' th' Kool-Aid, it's p'isoned!
If you don't like it you always have to choice to make your own contributions, Make it better if it is so pathetic.
Perhaps I have a different definition of "hate," but I don't see how you could even begin to make the case that Kathy's comments were "hateful." She said that Jesus had nothing to do with her award, and joked that the award "is her god now." What's hateful about that?
All she did was basically state, in the form of an irreverent joke, and not for the first time, that she's not a Christian. She got the award for being irreverent, for chrissake! Since when is it anti-Christian, offensive, or hateful to not be a Christian? She wasn't insulting Christians, she wasn't using offensive epithets or targeting specific people; this is not anywhere near to Michael Richards' debacle. She told Jesus to suck it. Get over it. You think everyone has to be respectful towards your imaginary friend just because you say so? That's absurd and unamerican. Yeah, she offended half the country--the stupider half that is too stuck up to appreciate her comedy anyhow. I thought it was hilarious.
The problem is that there are very prudish and overly sensitive attitudes in the Christian community. What do you expect of a religion that thinks the all-powerful cosmic creator of the universe is most concerned with what his puny creations do with their genitals? Luckily, America is still a country where someone like Kathy Griffin can say whatever she wants about Jesus or Superman or Mohamed without getting stoned or imprisoned. I know that plenty of E!'s watchers would rather it wasn't.
I understand what E! is doing, but it's cowardly just the same. E! has never been known for pushing the boundaries or creating quality content. They're in business of selling empty entertainment to idiots with short attention spans--offending Christians would only hurt them. That's why Kathy Griffin is on Bravo, which targets a much more open-minded audience.
It is unfortunate that such a talent woman can reveal such discusting and vile statements. She is selfish and vulgar and should be careful not to affend a vast majority who thank Jesus on a daily basis for their mere existence.
Making an award an idol or a god is extremely stupid and ignorant. This woman needs a lot of prayer if she thinks that anything else can come from that award...she already stripped away the little value it did have after she made her disgusting statements. She should take a few years on the time out "d" list.
