I Dispise Facebook -- What's Wrong With the Web's #1 Social Networking Site

advertisement

I despise Facebook. This enormously successful American business describes itself as "a social utility that connects you with the people around you". But hang on. Why on God's earth would I need a computer to connect with the people around me? Why should my relationships be mediated through the imagination of a bunch of supergeeks in California? What was wrong with the pub?

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

This is actually an extremely well thought out essay on the social and societal problems posed by Facebook and the like. I wonder, however, if these criticisms apply to Newsvine as well. Thoughts?

If it is between social networking on the internet and little residual actual friendships and no social networking on the internet and no residual actual friendships, I know which I prefer. People don't hang out less because of facebook. They also don't meet fewer people because of facebook. It is the same as it has always been except now you've got a facebook (df. a source to put a face to the name).

Facebook, I believe for most people, has become an organizational tool. After learning everything about everyone, the site has been saturated with information and "applications" to where it's only use is to organize get-togethers (and play scrabulous).
