Apple Inc. is reportedly in talks to offer free access to its iTunes music library to customers who pay extra for an iPod or iPhone.
The Cupertino technology company is discussing a deal with the major record labels, but the negotiations hinge on how Apple and the music companies would share the revenue, the Financial Times reported.
Representatives for Apple, EMI, Sony BMG and Warner Music declined to comment Wednesday. A spokesman for Universal Music Group did not return phone calls.
How premium?
Their DRM is pretty decent (as DRM goes) and if they actually manage to put something good together it could really do them a world of good in the market-place. Of course, iPod is already pretty far out in front so it's not as if this is a desperate attempt to gain market share.
I think it comes back to "how premium?" If it's reasonable, this could reshape the music industry.
Indeed, the price point would be crucial.
What'd be more useful for me, though, would be a premium-priced Apple TV with unlimited iTunes video access, or even just TV show access.
