For the first time, Bush revealed a personal way in which he has tried to acknowledge the sacrifice of soldiers and their families.
"I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf," he said. "I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal."
No, this is not from The Onion. Yes, he really did say that.
Oh my. Once again, Bush demonstrates how little he gets it.
I do agree that playing golf while the people you have sent to war are dying and getting maimed sends a bad signal. However, I think there is probably a little more that Bush could do to show solidarity with those mothers he mentioned. Like maybe send his own kids off to war...
And people claim Obama is elitist?
Like maybe send his own kids off to war...
Even if they joined the military, it is unlikely they would be sent to war. Did you see the kefluffle when it was announced that Prince Harry was going to Iraq?
http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/05/16/iraq.harry/index.html Britain's Prince Harry will not serve in Iraq as a troop commander because of "a number of specific threats" against him, the UK's top general says.
Can you imagine what it would be like if some group in Iraq or Afghanistan managed to kill or capture one of the Bush twins?
Wow. I bet the families really appreciate that. They have dead kids/husbands/wives, but at least W isn't playing golf. Big sacrifice there.
If memory serves Bush Sr. was bashed -including in Michael Moore's movie - for playing golf during the first Iraq war. So finally he's learned something.
Still I love the quote from the Washington Post piece on this
But Dallek, who is critical of the current president's legacy, said Bush's remarks about Iraq "speak to his shallowness." Dallek added: "That's his idea of sacrifice, to give up golf?"
Oh, yeah, sacrificing his golf time is a big showing of solidarity. I like him better already!
...
God, is this guy out of office yet?
