A question of appeasement?
May 15: While speaking about whether President Bush injected himself in the presidential campaign on Wednesday, Hardballs Chris Matthews and radio talk show host Kevin James disagreed over the definition of appeasement in American history circa 1939.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Man, Kevin James is a real douche bag just like all the right wing warmongers.

I actually didn't mean to post this. The seed window hadn't gone away when I noticed that someone else had beaten me to it.

as far as i can see, Kevin James was right, he didn't bring up the 1938 reference.
seems like a planned "hit job" by Chris Matthews, (successfully) trying to make James look stupid for not knowing his history. but hey, did you know what Chamberlain did to appease Hitler in 38? is it at all relevant to the Israel/Hamas conflict?

i fail to see the "destruction".

No. Look, this whole "appeasement" meme is what got this thing started. When we talk about appeasement we're talking about an inter-war period of diplomatic thought that was largely discredited due to its failure to prevent war with Nazi Germany.

Appeasement is ridiculed and has become the political insult it is seen as not only encouraging Hitler but actually making him stronger. In short, appeasement is almost synonymous with Chamberlain's concessions at Munich.

"I bring you peace, peace in our time!"

Matthews request that James talk about this goes directly to the heart of the absurd talking points that James was parroting. I don't discount a Matthews hatchet job, but my suspicion was that Matthews planned to point out that this wasn't appeasement because Obama isn't talking about giving anything away to prevent war which is what appeasement actually is.

The fact that James clearly had no idea not only of what appeasement actually means but the historical context of the phrase shows him to be the vapid used-car-salesman-pundit that he is. It sucked all of the credibility right out of his argument.

James came on that show with the presumption of some intellectual and ideological authority and significance. He left it a loud-mouthed blowhard whose ignorance had been laid bare before the world.

Chris Matthews is certainly no "appeaser" is he? Good for him. Matthews really played hardball by exposing Kevin James as an ignorant loser who had nothing of substance to offer. It did seem too easy though, didn't it.

I know lots of dumb right-wingers but this guy is dumber than most. I can't believe how stupid this idiot comes off in this segment. I guess during this election season, we're gonna see lots of these morons come out of their holes and embarass America with their "jokes".
