Paul Carroll was riding his bike when his cell phone vibrated.
Once he arrived home from the Hennepin County Courthouse, where he'd been served a gross misdemeanor for spray-painting the interior of a campus elevator, the lanky, wavy-haired University of Minnesota sophomore flipped open his phone and checked his messages. He was greeted by a voice he recognized immediately. It belonged to U of M Police Sgt. Erik Swanson, the officer to whom Carroll had turned himself in just three weeks earlier. When Carroll called back, Swanson asked him to meet at a coffee shop later that day, going on to assure a wary Carroll that he wasn't in trouble.
Of course they are. And while I'm sure they're looking at protesters for the DNC as well, I doubt they're recruiting them from Vegan Potlucks.
Most likely-as it's the government's job to protect all nominees-this seed seems to be directed as the governement is persecuting the left again. One sided.
I don't know. There was certainly appreciably more of a security presence at the GOP convention in 2004 than at the Democratic convention
Under orders from Cheney perhaps...
Don't get confused by the traditional notion of the Democratic and Republican parties being the left and right.
There are plenty — plenty — of citizens that view the republican party as extreme right and the democrats as moderately right. Which leaves plenty of room to the left for positions that the two-party system fails to represent.
As just the tip of the iceberg, think about the number of Rep. Kucinich supporters. Most of the Democrats decry him as far out there, but there are plenty of people in agreement with him.
My point is, protesters at the DNC aren't necessarily right-wing just because the DNC likes to call its self the left.
Whether or not the FBI is trying to place operatives within protest circles is simply fact. Its been the case for decades. The most recent motivation (and evidence) coming in relation to the anti-WTO / anti-IMF / anti-G8 protests. Think N30 in Seattle.
