Russia has invaded Georgia and the two countries are "very close" to war, if not already at war, a top official in Georgia's National Security Council said on Friday.
"If it's not war, then we are very close to it," Kakha Lamaia told Reuters. "The Russians have invaded Georgia and we are under attack."
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said in a television interview Friday that Russia was fighting a war with his country, and appealed to the United States for help.
