The next year, months before the Oklahoma City bombing took place, Biden introduced another bill called the Omnibus Counterterrorism Act of 1995. It previewed the 2001 Patriot Act by allowing secret evidence to be used in prosecutions, expanding the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and wiretap laws, creating a new federal crime of "terrorism" that could be invoked based on political beliefs, permitting the U.S. military to be used in civilian law enforcement, and allowing permanent detection of non-U.S. citizens without judicial review. The Center for National Security Studies said the bill would erode "constitutional and statutory due process protections" and would "authorize the Justice Department to pick and choose crimes to investigate and prosecute based on political beliefs and associations."

Biden himself draws parallels between his 1995 bill and its 2001 cousin. "I drafted a terrorism bill after the Oklahoma City bombing. And the bill John Ashcroft sent up was my bill," he said when the Patriot Act was being debated, according to the New Republic, which described him as "the Democratic Party's de facto spokesman on the war against terrorism."

Oh that'll endear him to Obama's more liberal base. Even the recreate 68 folks won't like that.

The actual Patriot Act seems to go a lot further than what Joe Biden proposed. Both parties are responsible for this act but more so the Republicans because they are the ones that pushed it, and had the reign of power when it passed. Regardless, no point in pointing fingers. The progressives in this country want to repeal the act or at least the parts that adversely affect individual rights. The right-wing on the other hand seems to support it.

you are forgetting about libertarian-minded people like Ron Paul and Judge Andrew Napolitano who are also against it. If we want our troops out of the MIddle East and end legislation like the patriot act, i'm afraid Ron Paul is probably our only hope.

I voted for the Democrats in 2006 and they did nothing they promised! I started to become anti-establishment around the 2008 election, then became a constitutional conservative as the Obama era went on....now i'm a libertarian and i really can't see myself voting for a Republican or Democrat on the federal level unless it is Ron Paul, Gary Johnson, or Herman Cain. I have some reservations about Cain, but Ron Paul is my favorite right now. We need the Constitution back!

There are defiantly some issues with Cain. If he is elected it will defiantly be more of the same.

Really? I think President Obama was kind enough to "re-up" the Patriot Act in February this year.

Yes, really! I didn't say that Obama didn't. He did so with the disapproval of his base. The good majority of progressives support repeal as I've stated. Assuming that everything Obama does is automatically progressive is your err.

Obama is a progressive but he has to curry favor with the establishment. He's a sell out to this own base. Since I'm a libertarian, I don't really support many of the politicians in COngress right now. I think the Democrats and Republicans are selling out the American people, not just their respective bases.

Really? Didn't President Obama and BOTH houses of Congress, with huge Democrat majorities, re-authorize the bill in February of this year?

Again, YES REALLY! Yes, Obama and many Democrats did not follow through with their campaign promise of repealing the bill or parts of it. Yes, I am disappointed in those politicians on this issue but what's new?

Michael Chertoff is the co-author along with Viet Dinh of the USA Patriot Act.

                  Hmmm

So this scumbag "basically wrote the patriot act" 6 years before it was implemented. This of course makes a liar out of a LOT of government officials that claimed the Patriot Act was written in response to 9-11. It is more likely that 9-11 was created in order to implement the Patriot Act. But equally scary is that the man that is credited with creating the most Unconstitutional, flat out illegal and totally evil piece of legislation is rewarded with the Vice Presidency. Isn't anyone terrified yet?

Let's face it. The patriot act had been planned for a long time and the Oklahoma city false flag was supposed to be the catalyst. The 911 false flag just put the nail in the coffin. You fools argue Democrat and Republican and go around in circles according to plan. See the big picture and realize the real enemy of the state are you the American people. The state doesn't want a free economically viable America. They want a 3rd world country America that can be controlled. It's seems to be working marvelously.
