On Friday of last week Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was figuring out if she has any anxieties about public speaking on the national stage. Now she knows; she has none. A short while ago she walked out onto a stage in St. Paul and addressed the Republican National Convention, accepting the Republican nomination for Vice President of the United States to chants of "Sarah! Sarah!"
For Palin, the stakes were unusually high. Her announcement as McCain's running mate last Friday was met with a degree of skepticism and shock and while Newsvine reporters at both the Republican and Ron Paul conventions indicated that she had been well received within the party and the larger conservative movement, the same could not be said of the country at large, least of all the media.
Tonight, Palin spoke to the Republicans second and America first. It was her first truly national address and one that sought primarily to establish her as a legitimate political contender in the Presidential arena. Though the McCain campaign has successfully kept expectations fairly low for Palin, she had to convincingly accomplish three major tasks in the course of her speech.
Palin's first task was her easiest. For millions of Americans watching the Convention from home, this speech was their first introduction to the Alaska Governor. Their first impression of her, both as a person and a political leader, was vital to the GOP's ability to sell the McCain/Palin ticket. To that end, Palin had to meet the expectations of the Republican party and come across as charming, intelligent, and capable. It was a task she accomplished with flying colors. She successfully played up her mayoral and gubernatorial experience and spoke extensively of her family, establishing her status as a Republican "every-woman," with warm and extensive tales of her family's history.
But the Republican party and the American people need Palin to be more than a charming, intelligent, and capable woman; they need her to be Presidential. While Palin delivered a speech that set her apart as a warm and friendly counterpart to John McCain's brass-tacks public persona, she had difficulty communicating a sense of gravitas in her delivery. Palin's extensive discussion of her family also left her sounding a bit more like a late-night radio talk show host than a political heavyweight as she later sought to portray herself.
That lack of gravitas should not, however, be confused for timidity. While the Republican Party stands for many things in 2008, the first and foremost issue on the mind of any GOP candidate for national office is why Barack Obama and Joe Biden do not deserve 272 electoral votes. Palin's attacks on the Democratic ticket were overt, brutal, and well delivered. She scored her political points with precision and pulled no punches, a style that played very well with the crowd at the RNC, but risks casting her as an attack-dog outside the walls of that convention center.
Politically aggressive or otherwise, few would argue that Palin's place on the Republican ticket is not also gamble for the 18,000,000 or so votes cast for Hillary Clinton in the Democratic Primary. With such a deep rift between Democrats and smoldering allegations of sexism as well it makes perfect sense to put a woman on the Republican ticket but that alone does not win those votes.
This speech marked Palin's first opportunity to present the Republican platform to the thousands – perhaps millions – of women to whom that political glass ceiling is a key issue. Palin's gender earns her their attention, but her ability to sell the platform is what will (or will not) win her their votes.
With "Drill Baby Drill" still reverberating throughout the convention hall, energy policy – particularly given its importance to her native Alaska – proved a logical and compelling starting point for Palin's Vice Presidential campaign. The Alaska Governor addressed the issue in pragmatic terms and common language, stating Our opponents say, again and again, that drilling will not solve all of America's energy problems - as if we all didn't know that already. But the fact that drilling won't solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all.
Palin's remarks on energy were a far cry from the controversial positions espoused by her party. Indeed, in her discussion of many issues Palin studiously avoided the more divisive extremes of the Republican platform and gravitated towards the comfortable common ground in the middle. Notably absent from her speech was the pivotal issue of abortion. This and other wedge issues serve to endear Palin (and by extension McCain) to the Evangelical wing of the party base, but that wing requires little convincing and Palin's speech was not for their benefit.
Consequently, Governor Palin's address avoided the traditional right-wing talking-points and platitudes, seeking a more centrist tone on issues while maintaining an offensive against the Democrats. Unlike McCain, whose Conservative credentials remain in some doubt, Palin's record as a "maverick" is that of someone pulling her local party to the right rather than the center and as a consequence the voters she spoke to were those towards the middle, not those on the fringe.
Also notably absent from Palin's speech was any mention of the veritable blizzard of stories surrounding her past and candidacy. Since McCain tapped Palin on Friday, radio, television, and computer networks have been ablaze with revelations, disclosures, and questions about her past and her present. Largely unvetted by both the McCain campaign and by the media at large, Palin passed up her first and highest profile opportunity to diffuse many of these issues. This could well prove the biggest failing of her address to the Convention. Since Friday, bookies in the UK have dropped the payout on a bet that McCain would dump Palin from the ticket from 20:1 to 8:1; a veritable impossibility now, but perhaps indicative of the difficulty of the campaign yet to come.
Really, I noticed the tone difference between the two conferences.
Last weeks DNC was uplifting, positive, hopeful, yes sometime a jab, but even showed occasional respectful words about McCain. The RNC, fearful, constant put downs and criticism. Harsh.
I watched Palin's speech with my hubby. He isn't much for politics, in fact in the 24 years I have known him, he never has voted. He felt that Palins speech was 'Rhetoric' and wasn't impressed.
I'll admit it, I thought he might be interested in politics for once because of her 'looks', but it wasn't enough, from listening to her.
There was another difference that troubled me, Palin outright lied about every one of Obama's policy plans, Obama criticized but accurately described McCain's plans, then discussed the differences.
Oh please do tell us the lies sassy. Rather than just pass off hateful statements. Perhaps "You" are the one passing of "Lies"?
Obama's tax plan is to lower taxes on anyone making less than $250,000.00. He is not raising taxes on anyone but the top 2% of taxpayers. He plans to get rid of wasteful ineffective programs that already exist, not "grow the government"(the government has grown more under the Bush administration than any modern president). He plans on investing in renewable energy technologies to put Americans back to work and bringing these technologies to market requires government investment, he will end tax breaks that oil companies have enjoyed while making record profits. Drilling is a temporary stop-gap measure - Oil is a finite resource, with China and India demanding and using more and more - we will deplete our resources without any making any progress towards energy independence through simply drilling, it would be better to hold those limited resources (ANWAR has 11 billion barrels - we can use that in a few years or less). If you really paid attention and were more open minded . . . .
DCStone:
If your husband hasn't voted in 24 years, he has no reason to complain if he doesn't like the way things are. No matter your party preference, the right to vote is a precious one that should not be wasted.
True, the old thinking was that way, Eddie, but more people don't vote because they feel their votes really don't matter, the powers that be will be.
Hey, I don't feel that way but a lot of people do.
The stolen election of 2000 further reinforced the attitude.
As I have stated elsewhere, as an American you have three choices when it comes to voting:
1.) Write in/independent
2.) Choose lesser of two evils
3.) Don't vote
Not voting is your right as an American for whatever reason. I'm one of those who says it doesn't matter who you vote for anyway since you aren't directly electing the President or Vice President. And since on three occasions (1876, 1888, & 2000), the electoral college went against the popular vote, no one can legitimately say that we are actually voting for who we want.
If you were the parent of 6-month old Trig, born with Down syndrome, would you have taken him to such a noisy convention for hours, lasting until midnight?
Would you have dragged the boyfriend of your pregnant daughter down to be scrutinized by national media?
Would you have said that the US military in Iraq is on a "Mission From God"?
It's all show-business and totally disgusting!
And Obama isn't "show business," especially the stadium scenario? Of course, campaigns are show business. That's why you have to read the text of the speeches and read articles by nonpartisan reporters, instead of just relying on hearing the speeches or sound bites of the speeches.
I do find it very interesting that Bristol Palin's pregnancy should not be an "issue" for the public, yet the boyfriend/fiance was brought down from Alaska to show the religious right he is going to "do the right thing". So why can they exploit this, yet the media should not use it?
Precisely, and in an interview with a well known reporter today, McCain kept repeatedly referring to Sarah's speech this evening as a 'performance'.
Palin delivered the speech just the way she was told to, for the most part everyone has low expectations because she's such an unknown. But, those words weren't hers, they were the party's. The GOP's slogan should be Party above Country - that's really what they always put first.
Line, hook and sinker. Did you also drink the Kool-aid. Please educate your self go and see who pays the larger portion of taxes in the USA. You might be in for a surprise, also what is the unemployment rate in england=5.2%. , France-7.5%, Canada-6.1%, Germany-8.8 %, USA-5.1% but of course Europe and Canada do it better according to all Democrats I mean Liberals.
And what is up with the "she didn't write her own speech" thing. Please tell me that everyone on here does not think these guys write their own speeches. Please, for the love of Pete tell me. Why do you think politicians have speech writers. Do you think Obama and McCain write their own speeches? Do you think Biden wrote his? Wow!
We ALL know that Robert. For people who have heard her speak before she got involved with this campaign know the difference. Political parties..are they not grand and their speech writers as well? I would like to see that they had to come up with their own speech, may be then we could judge how well they spoke and how sincere they are.
Obviously you all do not know this as someone below tried to tell me that the Democrats wrote their speeches all by their lonesomes with no help from anyone. And obviously the people up above criticizing Palin for reading off a prompter and not saying her own words do not realize it either. I wouldn't have written about it if everyone already knew it. That is obviously and painfully not the case.
wow to the guy that thinks biden will shred her, he must never have heard Biden speak. and the idea that the world will laugh at us if we elect her and Mc Cain, just think of how the world will react if we have a president that is unqualified with a wife who hates her country? Our enemies in this wold will be the only ones cheering.
One thing I will agree with a liberal commentator this evening: "GAME ON!!" ---See you at the ballot box buddy. We'll see who laughs last!
Both Barack and Michelle Obama wrote their own speeches, as did both Hillary and Bill Clinton, much was said at the convention that the Obama teem didn't even vet the speeches that the Clinton's had written - the only thing they did ask was that Bill Clinton talk about Foreign policy.
They all have advisors who help them with the content as well as writers to help with the cadence and transitions of the speech. I agree that the "speaker has to be in the speech" because a good speech has to sound like how the person would speak in an informal setting even though it's in a formal setting. For instance, Romney's speech tonight was terribly stilted--poor phrasing and poor delivery.
Sassy; FAIRY DUST! If you believe that I have a bridge in Brooklyn just for you
Folks check out that stuff:
If McCain/Palin win - I'm moving to France. The thought of four years of their leadership is too depressing.
Please provide more details, I will be happy to contribute to moving expenses....
I am with you. I will be moving back to Holland. I don't think we could survive.
Bye Bye
ok, I'm starting a moving fund for all of you... contributors?
No - don't move. Your departures would dumb down the country even more and America would really be in a death spiral. Don't lose faith, though, I don't see four more years of this unless James Dobson and Focus on the Family pray really really hard for "God's will to be done." (They were only partly joking when they prayed for rain during Obama's speech in Denver, but it didn't come to fruition.)
BYE, BYE. Au Revoir mon cour. Don't let the door hit you on the way out
Robert, Scott and Ivonne: The same crass, uninformed and sarcastic tone of your party. Well done, we all see where your alligence lies. REPUBLICANS: Party over Country.
The Republicans have never cared about this country, they just prey on those who do care about their country. The Republicans holding up signs that say "Country First" is such a joke. It is all about Party to them. They love their VP candidate because she can deliver negative attacks easily. That s how low their standards are. They've already said that this race is going to be about character (Remember the old "which candidate could you imagine yourself having a beer with?" logic that resulted in 4 more years of Bush?) and not about policy. Why? Because their policies are self-serving and doesn't even benefit most of their voters. Millionaires and suckers.
Yeah, I am sure that was the case. If you are naive enough to believe that speech writers did not edit or work on their speeches then good luck. I'm going to have to leave this site because I am getting dumber by the minute.
Bye Bye
Good Luck!
If that's the case, you are making a good decision. I don't think you have many minutes to spare...
I was totally worried because Mccain had picked "a girl", but WOW! I have to say I WAS impressed by her speech. Sure she has an accent, and seems a little more normal than most politicians, but I found it refreshing. I was completely shocked at how she came out swinging! She better keep it up cause boy she rattled some cages for sure. All those saying a mother shouldnt bash people like that need to look no further than good ole Hillary. Sure shes supporting Obama now, but there's nothing she didnt throw his way during her campaign. It's funny how people can dish it out but not take it. I'm betting Hillary was at home laughing her butt off at the shots sent Obamas way. You can tell me I'm wrong all you want, but I'd be willing to bet money on that one. It was an enjoyable night at the RNC!
Oh boy! Is the liberals and the liberal media in a bad mood after tonight's speech by Palin. She definately proved she is in the game to win. Good for her. A new day is dawning.
If McCain/Palin win, it is definately not going to be a "new day". It will be a dark day.
.....
If McCain/Palin wins we will probably see riots by the extremist left liberals who tore their party apart. The Democratic party has been destroyed by the extreme left. Democrats might as well start over.
And the republican party is being run by the far RIGHT.
We are not electing the president of our CHURCH- this is America we want a president of the country.
Most of us are in the middle....not far left or right!
Suspect those who are panning Palin's speech have never had to deliver a speech to a large group or dislike strong women or are Obama zombies. Palin gave a solid speech, and her delivery was excellent. She deftly incorporated humor, and her pacing was nicely measured so that listeners could easily grasp the content. While under enormous pressure, she rose to the occasion, and being a hockey mom, scored a goal!
I agree she delivered a greay speech, but did not touch on the economy or a lot of things.
Article starts off SUPRISINGLY "eventish", then lands on this: "But the Republican party and the American people need Palin to be more than a charming, intelligent, and capable woman; they need her to be Presidential."
It then sinks from there into what I would expect.
Newsvine needs a new classification for articles. Why NOT "Eventish"...or "Event Sorta", "OpNews", etc?
Definitly talent there though...
Did anyone else notice how feeble John McCain looked? His health seems to be deteriorating right before my eyes! The office of the president has aged all who have taken on the task, but we're only in the running stage. I think we all should worry about that. I have to admit that I was impressed with Gov. Palin's personality, I expected worse. However, I was really surprised that she "went there" over and over again with the negativity toward Obama. This is the same person who the McCain camp is trying to "protect" from the media? Well, the gloves are now off and she threw the first punch. I was hoping for a no mudslinger. Remember people, no matter what happens, we are through with the Bush/Cheney era! Rejoice!
Did anyone notice the Dems are running scared? I have a feeling Palin is a "Game" changer.
You better believe it James ,,, you nut jobs have stolen our Government twice , This is our Country , and now we are going to get it back.
OBAMA-BIDEN Then James, we wont be scared anymore
No McPow No how No way!
I'm an independent Jo Mo. I'm not some extremist left liberal or extremist right neocon. At least I'm not blinded by an empty no experience person attempting to run for President. You people don't even know why you are voting for Obama. But at the end of the day, when that curtian is pulled in the voters booth, people can be as sexist or racist as they please. Guess what...there isn't a darn thing you can do about it. My guess is you are going to not like the outcome.
Well, James, then are you ready for President Palin? Are you and yours completely confident that she can handle not only the horrendous mess this nation is in, but that she is your go to player on the world stage? Our future should not be a game, nor a gamble.
Are any of us sure about any of these people? How do we know Obama can do it? How do we know Palin can do it? We don't. This argument just doesn't work. It's like saying, "Yeah well my candidate is a male" when their candidate is too. It is great to have reason to support either candidate, but the experience and the negativity arguments do not work. Both sides have these problems.
Putin will have a field day with Palin.... believe that.
McCain may have said it right... we are Georgians. Expect an attack
Russia is not going to attack us any more than we are going to attack them. Get real. Either side can do whatever they want.
I'm just concerned at the very real possibility that we will have President Palin in one of the most chaotic times in history! McCain DOES NOT LOOK IN VERY GOOD HEALTH! I'm not wishing anything bad on the guy, but you all saw him! He can't even turn his neck - Bless his heart!
That is fine and I agree that it is a consideration, but again, both sides have this problem. Both tickets have people with severe experience problems. All I am saying is that we should move on to different issues to decide because this issue is a draw.
Point is is that if she somehow becomes Commander in Chief due to an emergency with McCain or whatever... World leaders will make mincemeat out of Palin.
It will all come out before they have a chance though.. as long as Republicans don't call the sexist card in the debates.
If she is touch... let her take it without protection.
Lets see what she is made of.. if she cracks like that glass ceiling she is after... then at least the American public will know before hand. People should be looking at her as the possible future president of the US.
I think I am seeing where you are coming from. You are assuming that she is inexperienced AND weak whereas you are assuming Obama is inexperienced but strong. I disagree and think they are one in the same, but at least I see where you are coming from on the experience issue.
The Bush Admnistration has left an enormous burden on all of us. The candidates should be admired for even volunteering to take on the task of clean up, while at the same time putting themselves and their family through the often vicious public scrutiny. As such, I agree with you Robert, the experience issue is a draw and should be taken off the table for once and for all. When in history has an incoming president had such a prelude of this magnitude? Good Lord. That said, I don't think I want a pit bull without lipstick hockey mom, who hollywood air kisses her children, to be at the world leader table at this point in history. Do you?
Not this time. The politics of the past no longer work. The deception of the far right is over. Their time is passed away. Watching the Republican Convention tonight was like watching a scene from Hitler and the Third Reich. Guns and troops and wars and terrorists and a dangerous world and God and religion and the PTA and hockey Moms. Not this time - not now - the stakes are too high. I am a proud U.S. Air Force veteran.
Very Deep. Thanks.
glad to hear from a veteran & thanks for reminding us of the fascist tone to the RNC's speakers' delivery defending war. I'm supporting the Democratic platform with fear & trepidation (after voting Democratic when Bush Sr was elected while his henchman, Oliver North was being questioned for his covert involvement in selling arms to Iran!) and, while Bush Jr was "elected" over Gore, at a time those who voted Nader (knowing full-well he'd never win but wanted to vote their conscience) handed the election to the Shrub overconfident that Gore had enough votes to win regardless.
-- the american public cannot underestimate the voting power of the bible belt states & the R's. Sarah Palin is accomplishing what the other VP contenders (Mitt Romney) cannot do, & that's to give McCain a warm & fuzzy, human, female, vulnerable family side to the R's / all the recent hubbub about her pregnant daughter, 5 kids, downs-syndrome child, her mention of her husband's native-American labor-class background, is in contrast to the moneyed side of the R's, feeding in to their need to be pictured as representing working class Americans. (got a kick seeing the un-PC buttons for her "hot chick" ) The race isn't over until after Nov. 4th -- anything can happen, nothing's for certain . . .
One thing is for sure , if she wears lipstick shes ready for a fight. I'm all for taking the high road but Enough.Shes a pit-bull in fur , she most likely skinned it with her teeth. This women wants to play , lets play . This pit-bull needs to have her balls cut . And everything should be fair game now . She put it out there. You should always get what you pay for and she paid with her bad judgement of the American people. Ya know why they don't want abortion ? Because they need more of our children to fight their wars for oil and world domination.... keep them kids a comin...War , killing , oil that's all they offer well and the right to control everything we do and say
I have said all along and I'll say it again. I'm waiting for the debates to weigh in on the issues of today and how each candidate responds to them then, not in these conventions. I for one, was quite impressed with Gov. Palins speech since I like many did not know of her until Senator McCain announced his pick for Vice President. Sen. Biden would be ill advised to go into the VP debate with Gov. Palin overconfident.
Excerpted from my blog, indiecognition.com:
When it comes to the intricacies of nuclear power, Palin couldn't even pronounce the name of the technology without a refresher in the form of phonetic spellings to help her out.
About 2/3 of the way through the transcript of her speech (on the official GOP Convention 2008 Web Site):
"Starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we're going to lay more pipelines … build more new-clear plants … create jobs with clean coal … and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal, and other alternative sources."
Could that be a misspelling, particularly since all the other words in the excerpt are spelled correctly? And could you be nitpicking?
This must be a joke. Do you really think she cannot pronounce nuclear? Seriously?
And hypothetically, if she hasn't figured out how to read by now, do you not think someone would have pulled her aside before the speech and told her how it is pronounced?
Come on people.
Well, Bush can't, so why should we assume other candidates can?
So who else out there thinks that Bill and Hillary were on their couch, unable to breath from laughter, because of the shots that Palin took at Obama tonight???? Sure they support Obama now(party lines and all) but I know they were loving every minute of it!
That has been a consistant joke about Bush - perhaps they were trying to make sure they didn't want to take any risks.
Excellent coverage here, KF - nice and balanced...
Yes, well done.
McCain's health and Palin's qualifications are a central question in this race. Ask yourself, do you really think this woman is ready to step into the presidency. Can you really see her negotiating against nuclear proliferation or making decisions to defend our nation?
I would much rather have the President mentoring the VP than a VP mentoring the President.
Yes, Palin has more experience than Obama, and he's running for president!
I'm not sure I would feel comfortable with her making those decisions, but I feel the same about Obama. Either I vote for an experienced Presidential candidate with an inexperienced VP, or I vote for an inexperienced Presidential candidate with a experienced vp. Not a tough choice.
James- agree with your statement to Sassy. There has been wide spread talk that on the blogs are dems blogging false rumors. Starting to think she's one of several since there is never any real anything.
Biden should go after her no holds barred, if she wants to play rough . . . she better be prepared. No whining.
She will make Biden look like the hater he really is. I hope Biden does go after her. It's about time a women takes him down to his knees.
I look forward to it. One of them has a history of sticking 'his' foot in his mouth when he gets flustered. Her strategy should be to upset Biden as often as possible.
So, what you are saying if Biden goes after her he hates women, if he treats her with kid gloves, isn't he giving her "special treatment". If she can't take the debate, she's not ready to be VP
Biden should definitely fight back.....only thing is.....apparently when you make her mad, she sticks her foot up your bottom....when Biden gets mad, he sticks his foot in his mouth.
Palin, certainly can sling mud, and is very tough. However, she was snide, smug, and bragging. She was foaming at the mouth with her kick-them-in-the-balls candor. Her inexperienced in speech giving is quite obvious. Palin stated she was a pit bull with lipstick. Gee, flattering will get a lot of late night jokes and cartoonist reving the mid night oil to crank out some political cartoons. She made some grammar mistakes, such as; refering John McCain as the "kinda guy who is ready to lead the country." She needs a speech coach. While we are at it, maybe somebody can work on her hair, and her body image. Throw in a stylist and a make up artist.
She might have two years of executive experience(part time governor), but McCain doesn't have any. Biden doesn't have any. Obama doesn't have any, but what they do have that she doesn't have, is a grasp of the English language and combine experience that qualifies them. I sure miss the Hillary debates. Even when she got her facts wrongs sometimes, I enjoyed watching her, because she's so
effective.
You know what gets me, McCain could have picked any Republican reputable congresswomen...why Palin? I think, she young and he can mold her. He wants those Moms who voted for George Bush during the second elections, they made up 40% of the votes. McCain is pandering to the Hillary voters. He's a gimmick in a cowboy hat. Annie Oakly from Alaska go back to Moose country.
Does Sarah Palin draw a heart over the letter "i" in her name? LOL!
poppinmary, you speak as if you didn't watch Biden's speech at the DNC conventions. Perhaps you should give a comparison of the two. If you did you would see they both slung the same garbage. You too bias to see that? You sound jealous of McCain's pick. Personally, if McCain's pick of Palin is pissing you liberals off....then he obviously made the right pick.
The VP's job in a campaign is typically to be the attack dog. I don't think Palin was a great speaker but I don't think she was a flawed speaker either. To come to the kind of analysis you have reached, poppinmary, you would almost have to have had criticism's in place before she uttered a word.
Then again, you think Hillary is so effective. Hillary has her moments but in some kind of speak-a-thon I think most people could tolerate listening to Palin as those listening to Hillary began dropping like flies from the screeches and cackles and panned emotions.
Palin did not misuse the English language. She deliberately used colloquialisms to the advantage of making the speech personal and reflective of conversation. Her job was to sling some mud, and she did so effectively. Find poppinmary's comments on Palin's appearance reflective of a catty woman!
As a first impression, I found her somewhat cold. Even when she talking about something she obviously cared about, she seemed aloof. Getting a hug from her would be as uncomfortable as hugging your grandmother in a bikini.
I disagree, but...LOL!
She comes across that way, because the words and tenor of the speech, were not hers.
