Obama, if he's going to go negative, has to maintain the moral high ground in his attacks. They absolutely must be factually verifiable or he risks erasing one of the things that has so starkly separated him from McCain.
McCain's dishonest negativity isn't playing well with voters. If Obama stays honest, the negative direction may not cost him as much.

Completely agree with Killfile. Spend one hour phone banking for Obama and it becomes patently obvious how deeply people are willing to give their attention and their trust to someone who doesn't lie to them. I've even had guys give up their Sunday football cruise to talk about this campaign and their availability to volunteer for the Obama/Biden ticket!

Barack has stayed above the fray mostly, and that includes the fight with Hillary. But I totally agree - Barack needs to walk the fine line, and I absolutely trust he will. He really has no choice, though, with the tactics McCain will implement from now until election day.

I am 50 and remember this story, since my accounts were with Lincoln savings and Loans.
McCain and Keating with the help of Reagan probably masterminded the greatest terrorist attack against the USA, by letting a few get rich and causing a financial collapse of the USA. History is now repeating its self and once again McCain has his hand in it.
Just recently McCain said he had limited knowledge of the economy, yet now he is claiming he has a plan. If his plan is the same as his past uneducated and greed ridden ideas, we better start keeping our money in our mattresses.

I'm 65 and I remember a lot about John McCain, but three incidents stand out in my mind; his POW story and confession, his crashing a plane in Spain by flying into electrical tower wires, and his role in the Keating Five.
With the Keating Five many said back then that because we had two decorated military types (McCain & Glenn) they were slapped on the wrist and censured by the Ethics committee even though the FBI wanted to nail all five. It's quite easy to surmise that McCain "associated" with a convicted criminal (Keating) and that close association cost taxpayers nearly $30 million dollars IIRC. People who live in glass houses should not throw rocks.

McCain wants to do whatever he can to avoid talking about the economy... even though that's the single most important issue on the minds of at least 60% of the electorate. So he throws the kitchen sink of negativity at Obama... praying that something works.
But, in light of the current financial crisis that is destroying retirement funds... the public needs to remember this:
Keating was sentenced to prison and required to pay more than $1 billion in civil penalties after being convicted on fraud, racketeering and conspiracy charges centered around his running of Lincoln Savings and Loan, which he bought in 1984. On April 14, 1989, Lincoln was seized by the government at an eventual taxpayer cost of $3.4 billion, then the most expensive thrift bailout in history.

Obama-Ayers- Distorting the Trough
CNN-Verdict: False???. There is no indication that Ayers and Obama are now "palling around," or that they have had an ongoing relationship in the past three years. Also, there is nothing to suggest that Ayers is now involved in terrorist activity or that other Obama associates are.
“We the People”-Verdict: True. There is clear evidence that Ayers (a former criminal and terrorist) and Obama were "palling around," for 20 years and as recent as 2001. Also, there is clear evidence that Ayers and Obama were sponsoring radical (and racist) programs and projects, inclusive of the sponsoring of the radical Church under leadership of J. Wright.

No links, a distorted view of the CNN finding, which says, clearly, FALSE, and no idea what "evidence" you may have.
I think that this is called "grasping at straws." Ayers is a highly respected expert in education and his radical views and actions of the 1960s were just that - something that's a part of history, undeniably, but also not much relating either to Ayers today or certainly not to Obama. I think that the most that you can say is that their circles overlapped at times many, many years after the 1960s, and never with anything approaching radical political intentions - unless you call running for State Senate a radical intention.
The bottom line on this whole Ayers meme is that it's one of a number of last-ditch attempts to label Obama with the baggage of 1960s radicals. Obama was a little boy at that time, far removed from any of that nonsense. America has moved on. Why don't Republicans want to move on? Why don't you want to focus on today's politics instead of dreary old garbage? My own belief is that the 1960s "culture wars" have been the backbone of the Republican push for power over the past forty years. Unfortunately for them most of the people who resented the 1960s culture have died or know better now than to allow people's use of that resentment to affect their political thinking.
We're in a whole other CENTURY now, for heaven's sake. Please tell us what's important in this century, not last century.

Bold letters do not make an opinion a fact. Ayers did commit a crime over 35 years ago. A crime that some people equate to terrorism although fortunately no one was injured nor was there intent to injure anyone. Those are facts.
Does committing a crime make somone a criminal for ever? If so then George W. Bush and Dick Cheney would be considered criminals for their drunk driving convictions decades ago if not for other things. Is that a useful or factual characterization - not really.
Looking at the man Ayers is today I would say that he is neither a criminal nor a terrorist as much as your simplistic black and white views might suggest.
The fact is that Ayers committed several very serious crimes over three decades ago. Aparently some people believe this means he should be exiled for life.
This is a distraction from the real issues that face the nation. Its an attempt to use slur and innuedo to influence people by using half truths. Its pathetic and irrelevant.

Who's Ayers? Why don't we ask the long-serving and well respected Mayor of Chicago, Richard Daley? He made this statement back in April:
There are a lot of reasons that Americans are angry about Washington politics. And one more example is the way Senator Obama's opponents are playing guilt-by-association, tarring him because he happens to know Bill Ayers.

McCain likes to make this look as if it were some sort of "youthful indiscretion" . A one time aberration of judgment.
But this involves him jetting around with his family and babysitter in tow to the Caribbean on Keating' plane. Fully paid vacations.
This is waaaay beyond "oops" , or "I shouldn't have said or done that" . This occured over an extended period of time. He had plenty of time for his moral or ethical voice to interceed in the "mistake" and say, "wait" .
Trouble is, he has no such voice. He didn't stop until he was caught.

There is a huge difference between supporting someone who is running for president and actually running for president yourself. Candidates shouldn't be judged on the opinions or actions of their supporters. Each major candidate has millions of supporters and shouldn't be hobbled with the actions of all who are working on their behalf. I don't believe Palin should be held accountable for some right-wing nut job yelling out 'kill him' at her rally. Obama shouldn't be held accountable for the actions of Ayers when he was a pre-teen.
Candidates should, however, be held accountable for their own past actions. Keating 5 was the Abramhoff scandal of its day and McCain was right in the middle of it, even if he was too dumb to actually know what was going on. He has also been a vocal proponent of deregulation that has helped lead us into the current financial mess. And he should be held accountable, both nationally and by the voters of his own state.
