Not That It's Any Of Our Business, But Bristol Palin Will Be Marrying A High-School Drop-Out Who Likes Obama

advertisement

Not surprisingly, Johnston was a little shocked when he learned about Bristol's pregnancy, but he says he quickly embraced the prospects of fatherhood. The baby is due Dec. 18. Johnston has dropped out of high school to take a job on the North Slope oil fields as an apprentice electrician.

Johnston hinted he's expecting a boy, but he declined to discuss baby names.

"I'm looking forward to having him," he said. "I'm going to take him hunting and fishing. He'll be everywhere with me."

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I'm sure dropping out to support Bristol and the kid seems smart now, but in a few years that's going to catch up with him.  This is one of the reasons sex-ed is so important but it's also one of the reasons that family support structures are so vital.  Are we seriously arguing that the Palins are so strapped for cash that he needs to drop out of school to support this kid?

Sure, it's partially his responsibiity, but if he's to marry into their family isn't his future important?

GED FTW?

Yeah, I thought that sounded like a bit of a stretch too.  "Well, she's knocked up so I'm gonna do the Manly thing and sacrifice my education so I can go be rugged in the oil fields."

Oh @!$%# (pardon my French).  I didn't even notice that Fox cut that out of their copy of the AP article.  Let me dig up an unblemished version.

Fox version (linked from Killfile's seed):

The young man said he wasn't an expert on politics by any stretch. Asked about Barack Obama, he replied: "I don't know anything about him. He seems like a good guy. I like him."

But Johnston still rooting for John McCain and Sarah Palin.

"I just hope she wins," he said. "She's my future mother-in-law. She better win."

Yahoo! version (note the full byline paid to Adam Goldman):

The young man said he wasn't an expert on politics by any stretch. Asked about Barack Obama, he replied: "I don't know anything about him. He seems like a good guy. I like him."

Johnston didn't register in time to vote, according to the Mat-Su Division of Elections Office in Wasilla. But he's still rooting for John McCain and Sarah Palin.

"I just hope she wins," he said. "She's my future mother-in-law. She better win."

Fair and balanced, indeed.  I should have clicked through right away when I noticed Killfile didn't highlight that part.  Not like him to miss a juicy bit like that.  Of course, if it's edited out, nothing to pick up on.

Good catch on the re-write spiffie!

Notice Fox didn't even bother to run a grammar check on their re-write:

AP: "But he's still rooting for John McCain and Sarah Palin."

Fox: "But Johnston still rooting for John McCain and Sarah Palin."

Notice how Fox (which didn't credit AP's Goldman, BTW) failed to use the possessive?

"He's" is not the possessive. It's a contraction of "he is".

Spiffie, absolutely fascinating find about the AP deletion. Thanks for relaying it. I looked around and FOX, CBSNews and MSNBC all have the following sentence removed:

Johnston didn't register in time to vote, according to the Mat-Su Division of Elections Office in Wasilla. But he's still rooting for John McCain and Sarah Palin.

http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/10/13/palins-future-son-law-clears-misconceptions/
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/10/13/politics/main4517412.shtml
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27160532/

Yet ABC and other sources that I quickly researched kept it intact.
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/WireStory?id=6019459&page=3

(I didn’t look too hard but couldn’t readily find it on CNN)

I’m going to submit this as a query to the AP and a few other sources about the license for MSM to modify AP articles.  Re: The first 2008 US Presidential debate and the Jopek (sp) bracelet noise, Keith Olbermann reported on Countdown that FoxNews removed the section that spoke to the fact that Jopek’s mother was “ecstatic” that Obama mentioned her son in the context of the debate - or something to that effect. Any way… it would be interesting to know how much, if any, license is given to amend AP articles. Many msm AP articles include: Copyright 2008 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

So, is that just for readers? I'd like to know!!!

Thanks again!

The AP gives some ability to license holders to alter stories transmitted over the wire, depending on which entity in the network produced the story, and what the particular arrangement is.  It's probably "okay" by AP standards that Fox altered the story (or got the story from a source which altered it), but it's still interesting to see what was removed.

If he's careful, it might not. I went to college with someone who worked as an electrician's helper on the North Slope instead of joining the Army. He paid for college and more on what he earned. He can pursue a GED while working and might very well do an awful lot of growing up up there.

SnotRag Dave -

Yes indeed, Fox's copywronger replaced a grammatically correct phrasing with a turd.

I can't even fathom why they bothered to tamper with the article in the first place. So what if they elided the part about not being registered to vote? The rest of the story they left untouched is far more damning. What kind of an asshat would drop out of school if he didn't have to?

Why don't we hear from the kid's parents as to what they think? Oh, the Palin/McCain camp has asked that they not give interviews. Hmmm what are they hiding? Maybe the kid isn't this kid's kid?

This whole "the kids are off limits" thing is bunk anyway.  Look at her debate or her statements regarding what she's going to do as VP.  She'll mention the Downs syndrome kid all day long, or the fact that she's a mother of five all day long, or until some one says something negative about her kids then it's OFF LIMITS.

I have to agree.  If family is off limits then family should be off limits in both directions.  They're not to be used as an asset or as a liability.  If she's going to use them as an asset for the campaign, they're not off limits.

          Rob,

It matters because it is a family values issue, which is an issue that the GOP has carried like a battle-flag for years now. So now we know that as long as the knocked-up, un-married teen is white and comes from "good stock" then it is ok. If that were either of Obama's daughters, he'd be forced to drop out of the race.

Aw, golly-gee, Mars, stop it. Doggone it, you are showing him up as hypocrite.

Ah, well, on second thought, let me join in too. Rob Ballew above tries to pretend that he above such petty matters. Perhaps, he remembers who wrote this:

          Rob Ballew

Good point Alistair, although I doubt it is very damaging to Obamas campaign. Obama could kill a litter of puppies and some on the left would find a way to advocate it. Thanks for stopping by.

Could it be Rob Ballew himself? Ya betcha! Doggone it, Rob, now you've just shown yourself to be a good hypocrite who likes to call others hypocrites.

You see I went after the source and his worshippers not a kid who if he was not associated to Palin would be someone you (Obama supporters) might even stand up for. Hence me calling you a hypocrite. I am cool with you being @!$%#s to Palin but when her children get involved is where it kind of seems like Bull@!$%#. I checked your comments page and you go around reprimanding the liberals for talking crap, while you yourself have demonstrated that you talk like that too and furthermore, you never reprimand your buddy rightwingers for talking crap. That, my friend, is hypocrisy. If you can't see it, too bad. Not even your God is gonna help you to see it.I can sense the anger by your usage of strong invectives.

That's what happens when someone's hypocrisy and double standards are publicly exposed. You know you should stop pretending that you are better than others cos you ain't. So, please give up that holier-than-thou attitude.

Ah so the issue is my foul mouth and me being a bit partisan.

A bit partisan? Surely you jest? This comes back to what I said - you fail to recognize what you are. It's like some part of you wants to be a good person and the other part wants to be bad. In the struggle of this split-personality, the bad one comes through on the internet and displays itself with a holier-than-thou attitude.

As for the foul mouth, you missed the point again. Point is you only use it against leftwingers, never against rightwingers. So, again, that makes you just as partisan as Sarah Palin. So, quit fooling yourself into thinking that you are only a bit partisan. You are partisan, you have double standards but only you don't see it.

Whatever man I love how the race card gets played whenever any evil conservative dare question some thing Obama or his supporters do.

Hmm, I don't remember saying anything about race or about evil. Typical talking points from the cons. Looks like race and evil are sure playing in your mind. Maybe you have some racism issues too? I don't know. Only you can answer that truthfully.

Point proven I know to not jump into another left wing circle jerk again thanks for the lesson.

Play the victim when your caught with your pants down. These internet games get old, my friend. And thanks for the parting shot from that rude mouth of yours, my friend. If you were a non-partisan person, you probably would've learned by now how to interact with the left-wing circle jerk like you call it, instead of coming in with a defensive attitude, a holier-than-the-damn-libs attitude.

Go in peace, my friend. I hope you find yourself one day. Good luck.

PrezO, this is very common with the Right wing recently. Their new strategy is to play innocent, while running one of the most offensive campaigns I have seen in my life-time. They pretend that people are "attacking" children, when they are not; they pretend people are being sexist when they question Palin's "policies"; they harbor racism from their peers, then pretend that the race card is thrown around carelessly by the Left.

These are the tactics of a desperate party, losing it's power. Sad.

It's not just the Republicans who are doing damage. The Democrats in Congress were just as complicit in enacting the AIG bailout and the $700B bailout into law. These are abysmally bad applications of federal funds, yet pols on both sides of the aisle drove them through anyway.

Congress and the president are out of their element and out of control with respect to the looming financial crisis. Expect them to do more damage as Mr. Bush's "house of cards" (fourth-to-last paragaph on this page) continues to topple.

Oh, and peep this. The Treasury is strong-arming banks while waving the flag of patriotism. Constitution? What Constitution?

Bristol Palin will end up on a magazine cover, just like Jamie Lynn Spears. Paid interviews and TV appearances will follow. Perhaps even a book deal. Sure, Levi will provide some support, but the 17 year old mom will have money thrown at her. In the beginning, anyway.

I'm still not convinced that Levi and Bristol will wed, but even if they do it won't be easy. They're teenagers, and her family is powerful. He'll be eaten alive.

This kid has what most of us get a diploma and a degree to get around - a connected family that isn't afraid to use it's status to get things done.  He said he's going to work in an oil production facility.  I bet he makes management by 20 and will probably be pulling in a couple hundred G's by 25.

High School degree?  Who needs that when you have Palin pulling for you.

Well that depends on if he gets his job honestly or not.  My understanding is that they're always looking for guys to work out there so that's likely to be on the up and up.  Now if there's inexplicable progression through the ranks... well... then there might be some funny business.

I honestly hadn't even thought of that angle.  Good catch.

If he lands the job, both her husband and her son-in-law will have strong ties to oil companies.  For the financial well being of her daughter and grandchild it would behoove her to look out for the oil industries best interest.

At first, I thought, oh no, I don't want to go into this anymore.  I am disgusted, not that Bristol Palin is pregnant, but that Sarah doesn't feel it's necessary to teach teens that if you can't or won't wait to have sex, that contraceptives are the only way to prevent pregnancy. (We'll skip the homosexual relationships to save for another time and place.) Maybe, having a child at such a young age isn't the end of the world, but it is certainly the lessening of a future.  We have programs in place to keep pregnant teens in school.  Many of their families support them (financially also).  As far as I see it there is absolutely no reason that Levi should be quitting school.  He has not only jeopardized his future, Bristol's and their child's, but also the future of their as yet marriage.  In an time when it is becoming harder and harder to get into a four year college, a GED isn't going to get you far.  I suppose an apprenticeship as an electrician isn't a bad way to go, but wouldn't you think that could have waited until he graduated from high school.  If this is the way that Palin sees as acceptable for our youngest adults to go, I fear for the education level of this country.  It will only get worse.  No child left behind, unless they choose to enter the workforce at the lowest levels possible.  Shame on you Sarah and Todd for allowing Bristol and Levi to think this is a good plan.

My sentiments exactly.  Additionally, their son has joined the military at 19. While I think the military is a good choice for young people, the more education you have when you join the better the experience. It's not like they can't afford to send a child to college or technical school. Their other children have been on the campaign trail for the 6 weeks she has been running for VP. The issue is the Palin's just don't value education.

Just think what a role model Bristol will be, living in the white house, unmarried with a child.  All those young girls will want to emulate her.

Did someone say "family values"?  no, that's right.  Family values died in July.

Ever noticed, how they've been a bit quiet on that front in the last couple of years what with all that homosexual affairs, extra-marital affairs, etc etc of the Republican leaders always in the news? Are you not concerned that Family Values are going down the drain? What would happen to this country if unwed teenagers went around getting pregnant and dropping out of school? Shame on you for comparing such an immensely important topic to a frivolous one as Lindsay Lohan.

Family values took a severe bi-partisan hit when women decided pursuing careers was more important than rearing their children. Forty years ago, my mother was always there for me and my brother, and as a result we excelled in public school and college, and found good jobs after graduation. I would not want to be a kid in a family today where both parents are working full-time.

I got to stay home with my last child and I can't tell you how much I enjoyed it. The problem is that in the 50's and 60's one person could make a living and support the family. That's no longer true. Of course, you have the people who choose to have it all. Work outside the home, have children and live the good life. It seems to me that living the good life is being able to stay home with your children and providing a stable home. Everyone has their opinion and it's what works for them.

That is another unfortunate consequence of women entering the job market in droves. As the supply of labor increased, the demand did not keep pace, and with more people hungry for jobs employers found they could hire at lower pay.

(Just to be clear, I applaud women who contribute their talents in the workforce. My manager at my last job was a joy to work for, as she was bright, very competent, and quite amiable.)

That is a heartwarming sentiment. Your children are fortunate to have you as their mother. For a child, there is no substitute for time spent with mom. That is what they love and need.

This is a problem that is also seen in the education of women.  One of my cousins has a bachelor of petroleum engineering degree. Her husband has a degree in electrical engineering.  He is the breadwinner and she has chosen to stay home and raise their 3 children, only one of whom is school-age right now.  She says that she plans to enter the job market (she went straight from college to marriage & motherhood) after their youngest child enters school.  By that point she will be 9 years removed from college and will not have even worked part-time in her field.  Will any employer be interested in hiring someone who hasn't worked in the field and who graduated from college 9 years earlier?  Should she have pursued a less-specialized degree?  Although I certainly applaud the fact that she graduated summa cum laude and that she decided to stay home to raise her family I can't help but think the job market will not be a friendly one and she will be far behind someone applying for the same job who might have just graduated a few months prior with that same degree.

I think the unfortunate consequence of a male-dominated society is that men constrain themselves only to the workplace. If a woman stays home, she's a hero and a homemaker. If a man stays home, he's lazy and unemployed.

I don't see how family values were affected by women in the workplace. I had two working parents and my values are just fine. I can see how it might be more stressful for the parents.

To be clear, I want to stay home because like amdac, I believe that staying home with your children is (or... will be) a joy. I just don't see why if my husband wanted to stay home with the children while I went and worked, he couldn't. Men are perfectly capable of being 'caregivers' and primary disciplinarians as much as women are. If that's what they want to do, I believe they should be able to do it.

This kid is cut out for success, with or without his GED. Just look at this artistic poetry he wrote:

I'm a @!$%#in' redneck who likes to snowboard and ride dirt bikes.

But I live to play hockey. I like to go camping and hang out with the boys, do some fishing, shoot some @!$%# and just @!$%#in' chillin' I guess.

Ya @!$%# with me I'll kick ass

Now this is a classic piece of folksy, Alaskan literature. Notice how he covers all of the basics of every day life in greater Wasilla: being a "@!$%#in' redneck" which is a prestigious status in small-town Alaska; he likes to snowboard and ride dirtbikes, which proves that he is a rebel and a huge fan of the X-Games; hockey, campin', hangin' out with "the boys", fishing, shooting @!$%#, and "@!$%#in' chillin" (which is a harder chill than "just chillin') which he "guesses" (he doesn't want to make a full commitment to @!$%#in' chillin', because he might feel like shootin' more @!$%# some time later). This shows that he can connect with the famous "Joe Six-Pack" that his future mother-in-law-by-force is trying....errr, tryin' to appeal to. And let's not forget the most important part of all, his quotation of the Wasilla village-motto "Ya @!$%# with me I'll kick ass" (no comma needed between "@!$%# with me" and "I'll kick ass" because there would be no pause at all between you @!$%#in' with him and him kickin' ass). This proves that he is, like all Alaskan men, rugged and tough.

Beautiful piece of literature, this guy is a genius. What would a genius do with a high school diploma? waste his time, that's what.

Well, the young man seems to be interested in growing up a bit, let's pray that this turns out better than many young "shotgun marriages." Hopefully he gets a chance to complete school with a GED.

What did you expect?  Of course he'll drop out of school, he's an Obama supporter- the government will take care of him.

Well, he IS a citizen of the largest welfare state in the country, Alaska. Ooops, that state isn't run by Democrats. You mean, the GOP is full of socialists too???? *gasp*

It is one of those double standard things, welfare good for Alaska but not big cities like Chicago,  Detroit, etc.   The Repubs play by two sets of standards, what they live by and what they want the rest of the world to live by.

Most young people have ridiculous MySpace pages. It's shouldn't be a surprise that the young man is a better person than the page would lead one to believe.

He'll have a better chance of finishing high school and  college under an Obama adminisration.

Thank goodness for Obama.  Any person who decides to drop of of school and society will be REWARDED.  Stick out your hand and he will fill it.  No questions asked and no accountability.  I did it wrong.  Went to school, started a business, hired over 50 people and all this while I could have just stuck out my hand and been REWARDED.  Their policy rewards incompetence and laziness and penalizes excellence.

Damn, for half a minute, I thought you were talking about how Republicans dole out money to corporations and corrupt regimes around the world...without even the hint of accountability.

However, when you mentioned effort of any kind, I realized immediately that  it must have been people you were disparaging. You know, living human beings mostly trying to survive. They don't stand much of a chance against such a proven and greedy ideology.

Go back to high school and get an education, you dumbass, because apparently you aren't even that smart to figure out doing that (getting an education, couldn't tell if you need help with what i was referring too) might be the best thing FOR your son/daughter.

Lord knows, he needs another retard father walking aimlessly the earth.

Johnston, 18, said in a brief interview with The Associated Press. "We both love each other. We both want to marry each other. And that's what we are going to do."

"Ain't that special", 5 years would be stretching this marriage. They both need counseling, and a solid education to make it work that long. I'm sure mommy Palin will find government loop holes to help them out. Good luck kiddies, you will need all you can get. The only statics's that match marriage's these days at this age are divorce's. Palin let her daughter and this kid down by not teaching sex education and putting her on the pill, also to  make sure Johnston's, "Johnson" had a raincoat.

The daughter is only following in her mothers foot steps.  Palin was pregnant and single.  Palin also married a high school drop out.  With Palin as an  authority figure and role model,  a govenor of a state she is a a role model for all young ladies in her sphere of influence.  As mayor it was only Wasilla as governor it was all of Alaska now as a VP canddidate its  to all Americans and in fact most of the free world.

All those drop out guys deserve a second chance, tell your college bound daughter to keep those drop out dudes on her list of possibles.  Birth before marriage is ok now according to GOP.  GOP leads by example again.

Again though, this can work out. My Uncle's first child was born before he married my Aunt, and he dropped out to support them. His kids have done well, as have he and his wife, who are about to celebrate 50 years of marriage.

Of course, my understanding is that Grandad told my Uncle he had two choices: marry her and support the child, or die. Please note that this is the father's father imposing these conditions, not the mother's. Stand up to your responsibilities seemed to be the message he was sending. I also have no idea of Grandad's politics: it was not a topic he ever discussed, although he was raised around Grandview, Misssouri, near the Truman farm, so I have my suspicions.
