Misleading Fox Nation Headline Implies That Climate Change Bill Is Treason

The Fox Nation writers have obviously abandoned any pretense towards non bias and are engaged in full tilt partisanship that is aimed at further dividing the Fox Nation from the United States of America. (Secession is popular in Fox Nation). The newest opinion headline is clearly a partisan point deliberately framed to incite the pitchfork gang in their ongoing battle against those evil, librul, forces. And once again, the headline doesn't reflect what is actually in the article; but rather, promotes a right wing talking point to reinforce the virulent anti Obama sentiment in Fox Nation.

Now as I understand it, "Fox Nation" is a social news site (sort of) that's run by the folks over at Fox News. Since Newsvine is a social news site that's run (sort of) by the folks over at MSNBC, it seems that we can draw some parallels.

So imagine, if you will the sort of outcry we'd have here if the Newsvine staff started re-headlining AP articles so as to accuse the Republicans of treason

Hell, I'm pretty sure that headline wouldn't stand on a user column here, let alone as the front-page banner headline.

I just want to know what America do these guys think they live in that congress representing the people of the country, voting on something is akin to treason?

What would they prefer, a dictator, king or continued corporate control where they can rule by being members of the board?

Well, if you think about it...being good stewards of the earth and caring about whether or not we alter our environment to the point that humans can no longer live on this planet...I suppose that amounts to treason in the minds of those folks over at Fox Noise.

I may be missing some minor detail here. It's hard for me to see things from their perspective...head buried deep inside rectum. It's the end of the world as THEY know it and I feel fine...(thanks REM).

I won't call it treason.I will call it bogus. It will (just like NAFTA) end up costing jobs and actually causing more harm to the environment than common sense legislation (encouraging regional high-speed rail,hybrid-electric or electric mass transit with nuclear power to handle the increased load, developing switchgrass ethanol and using our own sources of petroleum{offshore out of sightline drilling}).

Scuba,

One of the reasons Brazil has had such success with sugar cane is that the plant is well suited to the tropical environment.

The United States lacks the sort of climate that's really conducive to large-scale cane cultivation. That's why cotton, not sugar, was the major crop of the southern states.

Cotton was also a substitute for the previously more popular hemp. Hemp was discouraged to help push tobacco products to Britain. Hemp was used to build many pieces of ships for trade, Tobacco was the trade: sad irony.

The careless, irresponsible use of loaded terms such as "treasonous", "unpatriotic", "fascist", and "socialist" is not intended to present honest analysis or stimulate meaningful discussion. The sole purpose is to incite fear, hatred, and agitation among the viewers and constituents of the politicians, pundits, and commentators that engage in this behavior.

Nevermind the fact that the Bill is, well treason? And that it's mere design will put a good deal of private enterprise out of business costing even more American jobs, along with costing the average American a good deal more for energy. None of that matters, because after all people who have a lot of money invested in Green Technology need to make a lot of money. Al Gore is really hurting doncha know and Obama is not fully in control of every facet of American life without the Cap and Trade. It's a God Damed Crisis I tell you!

1. Learn the difference between fact and opinion. This was not an op ed article, so the title was innapropriate.

2. The sky is not falling. Learn to attract moderates by avoiding the use of polarizing rhetoric. If you want to save your party, it needs to begin today.

I keep hearing about Al Gore making money off this deal...I've had enough:

Evidence Please -- and not an opinion piece or a blog, but a hard news story with facts directly showing how Al Gore personally stands to make money on Cap and Trade legislation.

As for "treason" ...meh...I'm seating my a-- off down here in Texas. I'm fully aware that weather does not equate to climate and that some folks had a rough winter, but can't we figure out a way to combat changing climate patterns which are causing drought throughout the South and Southwest?

It's only moving to the next big thing after salsa that you have any chance of creating jobs to replace those lost in the past few years?

The headline of the linked article is “House Passes Milestone Energy, Climate Change Bill.” Obviously not happy with the AP headline, the Fox Nation writers, in order to put it in right wing terms the pitchfork gang can understand and appreciate, tweaked it thusly: “Treason? House Passes Direct Assault On Industrial Base.”

The headline of your seeded article is 'Misleading Fox Nation Headline Implies That Climate Change Bill Is Treason'. FN didn't call it treason, and while I'm sure an argument can be made that the goal is to communicate that the bill is treason, Killfile, make that argument somewhere other than the headline. Change it.

Headlines should be supported by the information presented in the article/seed, rather than used primarily as a means to draw attention.

[Woulda posted in Headline Discussion, but it isn't going through, I think I've got an admin bug.]

Due respect Tyler, but the article I seeded makes exactly that point. If I'd seeded Fox Nation directly you'd have a valid criticism here; that I was editorializing in my headline about Fox Nation. But I didn't seed Fox Nation, I seeded an editorial about Fox Nation that makes exactly this point

My headline is not supported by the information in the seeded article's headline but it's for damn sure supported in the seeded article itself.

The Fox Nation headline is a subjective statement of pure right wing propaganda by those who haven't read the constitution and is aimed at those who are constitutionally illiterate. But then, in Fox Nation, anyone who dares disagree with the solons of right wing dogma are traitors

My headline was not serving as a means of drawing attention. It accurately and succinctly summed up the arguments made in seeded article: that Fox Nation is calling the bill treasonous.

I have changed the headline but under protest. I think you made the wrong call here because I think you've confused my seeding an editorial with seeding the article the editorial is about.

They did the same song and dance concerning Clinton's fiscal policies. The result was a budget surplus. Republicans since have squandered that surplus.

Polls are done with similar sized samples all the time, many with fewer. It's not the size of the sample that matters nearly as much as the accuracy, that is, how well the sample is representative of the population as a whole.

Here's an alternate headline for you:
          Betraying the Planet

"Betraying the Planet" apparently isn't strong enough wording for the Seattle Times - They felt the need to re-title the piece The federal climate-change bill: Deniers commit treason against the planet

Not only are those who didn't vote for the Climate Change bill irresponsible and immoral, but in Paul Krugman's eyes (Op-Ed Columnist for the Gray Lady), it's far worse:

And as I watched the deniers make their arguments, I couldn't help thinking that I was watching a form of treason — treason against the planet.
          ...
Still, is it fair to call climate denial a form of treason? Isn't it politics as usual?

Yes, it is — and that's why it's unforgivable.

Do you remember the days when Bush administration officials claimed that terrorism posed an "existential threat" to America, a threat in whose face normal rules no longer applied? That was hyperbole — but the existential threat from climate change is all too real.

Glad to see all the invective is only coming from those treasonous Climate Change Deniers.

Just some question that have never been answered to my satisfaction...

Why is Rupert Murdoch, a foreign born mogul, allowed to control the majority of the United States Media outlets? Do you think China would let Oprah Winfrey buy all of the local stations, a movie studio, newspapers, a stock exchange and cable news?

It's just my opinion, but foreigners or non-native born citizens should not be allowed to purchase America's sources of information in regards to current events. We wouldn't let a foreign born person become president? The person that controls the media controls the thoughts and behavior of the masses. I question Murdoch's motives. I doubt they are truly, as Sarah Palin, would put it, "Pro-American." If they were, he'd realize that citizens need facts, not misinformation or infotainment. We need a return to journalism.

          Tragic Story

Personally, I find that thought really scary. There are millions of Americans who immigrated here legally for the love of this country, worked hard, studied harder and EARNED their right to be American instead of just winning the genetic lottery like 99% of "Americans." And you think that because of where they were born, they should be 2nd class citizens? Would you then push them out of education? Out of politics?

Lets flip that on its head: How about every American who is born in the US but lived abroad should not be allowed to run for public office or in media? After all, perhaps during their time abroad they became "anti-American" and "unduly influenced" by the local culture? That sounds pretty ignorant right?

If you don't like Murdoch, great! More power to you. But to want to limit what Americans can and can not do based only on something they had no control over (anymore than picking their own gender or skin color) is just wrong.

If my thoughts are so scary then why did the founding fathers require that a president must be a natural born citizen? Is it possible they foresaw a potential conflict of interest? I'd rather protect the country than take a chance and make immigrants "feel good." It's about time America put Americans first. I like immigrants, but foreigners are not guarantueed a right to live, work, own businesses here or become citizens. They are entering out country. Our interest must come first. Isn't that what Bush did with the Muslims and terrorists? Why was Bush's concerns valid and not mine in this instance? Is it because he is a wealthy white non-Muslim?

Murdoch has a monopoly on the media or at a minimum, too large of a hand on too many information sources. America used to have anti-trust laws to protect the public and consumers. The fact that he is not from the United States combined with what his media outlets produce makes me question if he shares governing principles that the founders did. Who goes to court to fight for the right to provide faulty information, excuse me, "opinion" to the public?

Contrary to popular opinion, I'm not into the whole left vs. right thing. I am concerned about the misinformation and inflamatory headlines that are blared by NewsCorp companies. Other outlets are guilty as well, but right now I'm focusing on Murdoch and Fox.

How many loyal Fox Noise viewers know the original reason Bush wanted to declare war in Iraq? How many of these viewers thought that Obama is a foreign born Muslim? These same people are likely to still belive that Saddam and Obama teamed up for 9-11. Fox doesn't seem to care what it puts out, as long as it furthers the neocon and/or multi-national corporation agenda.

Murdoch has moved reporting in this country from the 5 w's to O'Reilly style belligerence and Nazi propaganda techniques. I'd be just as concerned if he were born here, but his background makes me less likely to believe that he has our best interests.

Murdoch WAS Australian and Fox News and the New York Post are SO pro-Australian, it makes your head spin.

That right there shoots down your argument on foreign influence.

Secondly, once you BECOME an American (which he DID) you are entitled to the same rights as everyone else. AGAIN: I don't care if you agree, disagree with him. The fact is HE IS AMERICAN. He deserves the same rights as you.

It is just as wrong to say "Foreign born=bad" as to say "Black=bad.

-The receptive powers of the masses are very restricted, and their understanding is feeble. On the other hand, they quickly forget. Such being the case, all effective propaganda must be confined to a few bare essentials and those must be expressed as far as possible in stereotyped formulas. These slogans should be persistently repeated until the very last individual has come to grasp the idea that has been put forward.

-Every change that is made in the subject of a propagandist message must always emphasize the same conclusion. The leading slogan must of course be illustrated in many ways and from several angles, but in the end one must always return to the assertion of the same formula."

Call it whatever you wish, it's a screwing of America. Who pushes something through without even knowing what's in it? Who does? This is nothing more than an eye in the finger of the American public and boils down to "we don't care what you want or think, were going ahead as planned". We didn't give full access to this, well, because there are just too many big words in it and you citizens just aren't bright enough to understand it, so it was easier to just push it through as opposed to actually looking at it to see if it carries any water. This is a good plan, hopefully from here on out the government won't needlessly notify us of new bills and such as they just interupt in our American Idol and Michael Jackson coverage viewing.

I don't understand why we are so worried about the climate and not more important issues that need dealt with here in the USA??? I realize the climate is an important issue but, what good is doing our country's part against Global Warming if we are going broke and might become a part of some other country when all the debts are called in? I think we should take care of us first the climate second.

After the USA is taken care of then, we can worry about the climate.

Because its like putting up a building, you make sure the foundation deep and strong enough to hold it up, the harm we are doing to the environment is weaking the ability to support the planet. Your in effect turning the planet into "the leaning tower of Pisa" and how many business do you see at the top of that building?

ZERO. Yes, by the time we, in America, are all finished "cleaning up the environment" for everybody else there won't be any American business left because they will have been taxed, fined, and levied out of the country or maybe out of existence!

Folks don't seem to get that some radical departures now need to be made in order for the U.S. to gain more independence by use of alternative energy forms, since Ronald Reagan began the mocking of the climate change debate when he took solar collectors off the White House roof, which Carter had had installed. The Republicans who buy FOX crap know full well that God takes care of climate change, so they don't have to get with a national program to shift to A Energy.

Michelle Bachman! What a dolt. Yes, I have a evangelical sister in law and she spews out the silliness that since God gave dominion over animals, God will make things work out in regard to climate change. No responsibility here. I have urged the President to offer significant incentives to farmers and ranchers for installation of various alternative energy generators. The point would be that farmers and ranchers, as producers of food products, get "powered up" and perhaps more, through methane power generation; biodiesel; second generation ethanol; tidal, wind or solar energy sources. In each case, since farmers and ranchers are feed producers for the world, their harvest is more valuable in that traditional way v. selling corn and soybeans for first generation ethanol. Brazil is on a second generation ethanol production schedule, and use by their home built cars. We can do the same.

That makes farmers and ranchers significant gainers in the shifts needed for climate change CO2 and methane generation ... and should help them stay solvent, as well, over and above the generation of crops meant to produce food. We can help farmers and ranchers make these changes, and use the power generation as a by product for this work.

Climate change is taken care of by humans doing what God knows they can do. Human beings, being so creative, can do God's work in saving the Planet.

Change happens whether you want it to or not and whether you believe in it or not. Doesn't matter. Those who learn to deal with it prosper. Those who don't throw a hissy-fit and generally sink lower down the scale. My advise is to politely support or object as you see fit, but be prepared to adapt when it happens. The alternative is nasty, power-driven argument, which only steels your opposition and enrages you. Fox has made its choice, now you need to make yours.

Fox Nation is mostly full of one-way thinking, but how can we trust a government that passes a 1200-1300 page bill that hasn't been read? This is treachery and treason. Passing a muli-billion dollar bill that is based upon unproven science; that's treachery or wrecklessness at its finest. Passing tax increases on all Americans, amidst a recession that will mostly likely become a depression, is at the very least self serving if not treacherous, if not treason.

No doubt about those 1300 page bills, but this is hardly the first time this has happened. Remember last fall with the Bail out. That was immoral and completely contrary to capatalism. Obama and McCain's votes of yes caused me to go 3rd party in the general election. I called my Senators and congressman from overseas. Guess what. Despite everyone's calling and writing, they passed it. That was economic treason on the part of those who voted for it. The CEOs who caused this are cashing out like Madoff without the jail time. Where was Fox with the headlines of Treason then?

We need to be able to rely on the press for "just the facts" and not the propaganda games. How are the citizens supposed to make informed decisions?

Good point Eric!! Since the "Obama Bunch" has taken office just about every change that they have made cost the tax payers more money. Right from the start he raised my taxes on cigarette and then regulated them. All of the other programs will do the same. Like it has been said for a long time tax and spend is the new game in town. The "Obama Bunch" said that he wouldn't raise the taxes on anyone making under $150,00.00 a year (I think that was the figure) well that one didn't last. What I thing he didn't tell everyone is that he would raise the cost of living on all of us to match the spending that that he wants. So in reality no new taxes.

As for Fox News, I don't agree with everything they report but they do tell where the money is coming from and going to. This climate control bill mess is so vast and rushed through Congress so quickly that is was intentional so no one could read the damn thing. Maybe one or two years from now we will find what the cost is. I hope that someone will shoot it down by the time it gets to the senate.

That's the key here; we have to end our reliance on oil, no question about that. The sting needs to be taken out of this bill. If it is such a high priority bill, cut spending to pay for it; don't leverage it on the American people.

DMkatt: There were several on Fox News that didn't like the bail outs of 2008; to your point, the rhetoric didn't spike to the treason level.

wasn't it Obama himself a few weeks ago who said for every new program there had to be a cut in spending.

                http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/06/10/paygo/

Obama repeated his vow to halve the deficit by the end of his first term, and he said PAYGO is an important step toward making that happen. A previous PAYGO mandate helped erase federal budget deficits in the 1990s, and subsequent ineffective rules contributed to the current budget deficits, Obama said.

"Paying for what you spend is basic common sense. Perhaps that's why, here in Washington, it has been so elusive," the president said Tuesday.

Just another lie. If he is going to keep adding bills and entitlements to the backs of the American people, we will never be able to pay for this. Cut spending. Cut entitlements. Cut foreign aid to say HAMAS, a terrorist organization the Obama team gave aid to. Half these countries we give money to would just as soon cut us at the knees, so stop it.

Even if your numbers are correct, they represent a very tiny amount of the television watching American public. Census bureau data maintains there are 113,568,000 households in the US. Assuming there is at least one TV in each household, 3191/113,568, not quite .03 percent of the American households watch the O'Reilly factor. The other shows mentioned are viewed by an even smaller amount of the American public. While they may be popular as cable news programs go, in reality they have a very small following.

                      http://www.census.gov/prod/1/pop/p25-1129.pdf

according to Rasmussen, people who "strongly disapprove" of Obama is now higher than those who "strongly approve." 33% strongly disapprove of Obama and 31% strongly approve

The most recent Gallup puts the presidents approval rating at 60% approve and 32% disapprove.

Clearly, the two companies are talking to very different populations with this magnitude of variation in the results. With the poll results being so varied however, they're pretty much useless for predictive purposes. I tend to agree with this analogy.

Even if your numbers are correct, they represent a very tiny amount of the television watching American public.

Specious argument. No one media outlet captures a majority of the population. Media outlets are rated in terms of their competition.

not quite .03 percent of the American households watch the O'Reilly

If O'Reilly's is that low then think how low Olbermann's must be. O'Reilly is approaching Big three broadcast numbers, which is quite an accomplishment for a cable program.

I don't watch any of them. My point is most Americans don't either.

Perhaps, but then in most elections most Americans don't vote. I'd wager the O'Reilly/Hannity (as well as the Olbermann/Maddow) audience is very much more engaged and aware politically than average.

Is it not strange that what we need to do for the climate is exactly what we need to do to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

The filthy wealthy don't care. The greedy republicans make money if it is Texas oil or Saudi oil but not if it is wind or sun driven.

The filthy wealthy republicans have done more harm to America than all the mass murdering macho muslim men!!!!

                          No Dah!!!!

of course the wealthy care--they're the ones that you libs take all the money from in order to pay for all this insanity.

40% of Americans are conservative. Guess what? most of us aren't rich.

Guess what else? Obama has his OWN oil buddies, too!

40% of Americans self-identify as Conservative... but I'd bet you that if you had those "moderates" take a political ideology test they'd find that not a lot of them are moderates.

The Liberal/Moderate/Conservative polling data doesn't line up with any issue data that I'm aware of. That suggests that people don't really understand or don't care what those terms mean.

The EPA knows the science behind climate change is a colossal fraud that will make Nancy and Al wealthy. The Obama administration will not let them release this info. Let's hope the senate votes it down.

The largest contributors to the co2 emmisions on the planet are people and animals, with the methane from the ocean floors being released.

The population keeps growing and the second factor the methane gases are also natural from the oceans, but nobody tells the people these facts.

Only the politicians and their friends will see the benefits of this package that was voted on in the middle of the night without reading it.
