Teabagger Fail: Rep Todd Akin (R-MO) Crows That The Pledge Of Allegiance "Drives Liberals Crazy" But Manages To Forget The Words When He Leads It

advertisement

Rep. Todd Akin of Missouri today led a crowd of Teabaggers in front of the Capitol in a rousing recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. He said it "drives liberals crazy" when people say the Pledge. Well, our skin doesn't burn or anything when you say it aloud, Rep. Akin, but it does drive us crazy when somebody gets all smug about owning the Pledge of Allegiance and then he can't @!$%#ing say it without screwing it up:

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I often wonder if political attacks don't reveal more about the attacker than the attacked. In this case, I think they obviously did.

the pledge of allegiance is a socialist invention & it's major modifications were made by FDR.

why are teabaggers so desperate to involve themselves in an exercise in socialist indoctrination & subservience to the all mighty state?

lastly, our govt has proven that the oath is less than meaningless, all the US born japanese who recited this every day went to the same camps as their japan born relatives who didn't.

No surprise that he would leave out the word "indivisible" since the radical right is using every scare tactic it can find to keep this nation divided.

Personally, as a liberal, I love saying the Pledge. It doesn't drive me crazy. Though I do leave out the "under god" part that was only added under Ike as a PR stunt in the ol' red-scare days.

I don't even know what to say anymore about people like this. I'm almost too burned out to try.

Ok I'll try.

This guy needs to write for Sarah Palin. Any attempt by her to become president of the United States is going to go down in flames. She might as well impart a little humor into her campaign when at all possible. I'd watch.

I simply don't say it often. Especially if I've been in a number of meetings where it was recited that day. Mostly folks don't notice. They seem to notice more if my loud voice suddenly doesn't say the "under god". I figure, I only had to say "I do" once for every marriage, why should I have to pledge loyalty to a piece of fabric every day . . .and, besides, with marriage three down the tubes I don't have a good track record for promises anyway. :D

Funniest story, in retrospect I was pissed at the time, is when my son was suspended for saying, "One nation under Goddess". He was in 5th or 6th grade at a rural public school. I guess they didn't get the memo about not persecuting children for stuff like that. LOL

In philosophy we say that a question reveals the knowledge of the person asking the question. So I think it can also be said that a person questioning policy is revealing their knowledge of the policy. If it happens to be that the questions take the form of attacks, I think the attack is certainly revealing the knowledge of the attacker.

Cheers,

The pledge of allegiance is annoying and pointless to me for two reasons.

First, it's an anti-communist propaganda tool left over from the the post WWII paranoia of government and society.

Second, if you look at it from a christian point of view, then it amounts to nothing more than idle worship, which of course is blasphemous to God.

So in reality, these people touting how virtuous and american the pledge is really have no clue what they are talking about and are hypocritical in their statements.

But what else would anyone expect from these idiots?

I'm not sure exactly which liberals Representative Akin is referring to, but I doubt that will include me. And I'm one of them.

To be honest?

I honestly don't think they care because, they just don't honestly care....

All they care about anymore is a belly-full of hate and something/someone to blame it on anymore... even if that means tearing down everything America stood for to begin with...

It's frankly, sad, to me at least, but, there it is.... they won't stop because they have no reason to and... in the end, they will consume everything they claimed to stand for....

History just SUCKS sometimes......

More of the same... Say "God Bless America" and wave the flag, even if it falls over while you're fumbling all over yourself trying to remember the Pledge. And have John Boehner quoting from the "Constitution" even though it was actually the Declaration of Independence.

It's all about symbology and fake patriotism, because, honestly, that's all they've got to cling to anymore. They can't have an honest debate about anything because they'll lose in a fair discussion.

Actually Susan, the 'pundits' are saying it was an example of the 'New' (Palin lead) extreme right wing's power to effect change by getting rid of the 'moderate' or 'establishment' Republicans...

Viewpoints: GOP moderates face revolt from their own radical right

The net result is minus-one for the Republicans and plus-one for the Democrats in the House. That arithmetic seems to have escaped Erick Erickson, editor in chief of the Web site RedState.com, which is almost as influential in the tea party world as Palin's Facebook page. He wrote: "This is a huge win for conservatives. … We did exactly what we set out to do – crush the establishment-backed GOP candidate."

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele crowed about winning the two governorships. "Assume the Heisman position. Yeah baby. That's my moment," he said Wednesday on MSNBC. But even Steele couldn't find joy in the New York debacle. "I don't see a victory in losing seats," he said, quite logically.

The tea party people have made clear, however, that logic doesn't count – and that this is just the beginning. The next target, now that they've made the world safe from Scozzafava, seems to be Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, who is running for the Senate. Crist committed the unforgivable sin of supporting Obama's stimulus bill, and must face a conservative former state legislator, Marco Rubio, in the primary.

Though I don't know what good they'll do, since they aren't 'in office'...

Hrm. We control Congress and the Presidency.

But of course, the GOP has the new governors in NJ and VA and all the important national decisions they will--oh, wait...

The Queen Teabagger couldn't even get one of her own past the voters in a conservative-for-150-years district.

LOL.

How do you plan to blame Bush for the things that are totally "owned" by Obama? I was NOT happy with Bush, and am a lot less happy with Obama and company. You can't spend your way out of debt! Just exactly where do you all think the money is going to come from for all the programs, bail outs, give aways etc? They can't give away anything until they have taken it away from someone else.

The simple fact is that Bush eff-up the economy and we will be feeling the pain of that for awhile longer. Unemployment went from 7.5% to 10.6% in Reagan's first 2.5 years, did you think him a failure for that?

Can't say I'm too happy with a lot of that bailout @!$%# myself. I also found it interesting that Rep. Boehner didn't know the difference between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. I truly believe most 8th graders could tell you that difference. My 6th grade granddaughter certainly can. These demonstrations simply show me that the Republican party is desperate enough to align themselves with anyone. There is however no place in their tent if you are any color except white or if you dare to hold any social value they don't think you should have.

Mich-Hell Bachman,John Boehner, Mr.Braun and Virginnia (Opossum face) Foxx ( I used to have a sofa with the exact same fabric as her jacket) and other mentally challenged Republican legislators have taken the final step in the complete destruction of their credibility. They made mistake after mistake after mistake and still claim victory and relevance to what this nation really needs. What galls me the most is that banner with the Dachau victims and the statement it held. How could a human being act this way? They have become the very thing that they hate! Sick,Heinous,Communistic Heartless Bastards! And they are PROUD of this! These people are Americans in name only and Insane in every way! And by the way...where was the Queen W.A.S.P.? It drives me crazy when people pause between "one nation" and "under God".

Without a pause it's an affirmation ("One Nation under God. Yes!).

With the pause it's a constraint ("One Nation -- sigh -- under God -- whether you like it or not," which is I guess how it was intended).

At least the Christians are beginning to understand the second sigh. ("One Nation -- sigh -- indivisible --).

The prepositional phrase "under God" (not original to the Pledge, but added later to foil the Commies) is offset by commas; there SHOULD be a pause.

I had a journalism grammar professor who said that commas surrounding a phrase should be treated like "handles;" the phrase isn't needed, and it can be "grabbed by the handles" and pulled out without altering the meaning.

Seems to me that the commas were used perfectly in the PoA. :)

This sort of pop culture reference was why I finally let my kids watch cartoons as children. I only let them watch PBS or the old Nickelodeon until the eldest was about 4. He came in one day and said he needed a scarf. When queried as to why, he replied, "We are playing super heroes and I want to be Dr Who . . or Capt Moroni". (We were Mormon) I asked him what the other children were being and he said something about a Super Guy and a Spider Guy. I knew then he would never be able to communicate with his peers if I continued my "no network television" policy and let him start watching Saturday morning cartoons.

Sorry for going off topic, but whenever I see a printed copy of what was presumably a copy of the Health Care bill obscuring a podium I feel compelled to suggest that a CD with a pdf of the thing would be a better way to do. With a pdf you can search for keywords, print out sections of special interest to you, easier to haul around and so on.

Can you imagine a spiritual leader printing out the a governing theological text on single-sided double-spaced and delivering a sermon from behind it?

Yes, there is always something to complain about: a self-righteous and dumb tea-bagger comes to mind and thanks to Killfile for directing us to him.

What is your preference "you libs" or "you liberuuls". I don't like either but endure both as long as I can say "tea bagger". Never tried adding new words to the NV spellchecker. Can we do that? I have tried "teabagger" but it doesn't fly though "tea bagger" does. I just hate the extra space (wastes paper) for all my printouts of my best comments.

My typos are usually due to leaving out critical words. For example I'd type " I like Sarah Palin or Brussels sprouts" when I really mean " I don't like Saral Palin or Brussels sprouts". Kind of scary huh? No spellchecker safety net there.

Hey... Not nearly as bad as Boehner saying he was holding his pocket constitution and when he begins to read from it he actually reads the Declaration of Independence... The complete incompetence and stupidity of our elected officials never ceases to amaze me.

What truly amazes me are 'the people' who believe them (unless they were told they would have believed "B" was reading the 'Constitution' anyway, they are ignorant of the difference) and vote them into office...

Schroedinger, you're most welcome. I didn't capitalize "Lord" because I thought it might be censured/filtered or something. As you, I just try so hard to keep things in a proper perspective, not get too radical (although I am pretty set in what I accept and believe in), and still be compassionate and caring toward others. It must be an awful burden to carry around so much hate inside. I'm truly grateful that I don't have to tote that on my back every day when I arise.

To be fair, Akin made a mistake. I enjoy it when the high and mighty fall flat on their faces, however, especially when the fall-ee is so damn self-righteous and sanctimonious. Nevertheless, it was a mistake.

Boehner, on the other hand, is something else. Has he never read either the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence? What was that he was holding in his hand? I doubt it was mis-labeled: Boehner simply doesn't know our Constitution from the Declaration of Independence! And he's a leader in our House of Representatives! That's stunning. That's a national embarrassment. He's up there just winging it, ignorant of our history, ignorant of our most important documents, ignorant of our heritage. And all the while he thinks he's cool doing it!

That's stunning. That's unexplicable. That's unforgivable. We deserve better.
