KBR/Halliburton may have poisoned 100,000 Troops/Contractors/Etc in Iraq

advertisement

Defense contractor KBR may have exposed as many as 100,000 people, including US troops, to cancer-causing toxins by burning waste in open-air pits in Iraq, says a series of class-action lawsuits filed against the company.

At least 22 separate lawsuits claiming KBR poisoned American soldiers in Iraq have been combined into a single massive lawsuit that says KBR, which until not long ago was a subsidiary of Halliburton, sought to save money by disposing of toxic waste and incinerating numerous potentially harmful substances in open-air "burn pits."

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I understand the political pressures that bring great powers to rely upon mercenaries but there's a cost associated with that and I don't think we're really thinking about that cost when all we debate is the number of troops deployed.

KBR burned "tires, lithium batteries ... biohazard materials (including human corpses), medical supplies (including those used during smallpox inoculations), paints, solvents, asbestos insulation, items containing pesticides, polyvinyl chloride pipes, animal carcasses, dangerous chemicals, and hundreds of thousands of plastic water bottles."

2008 report by the Pentagon asserted that "adverse health risks are unlikely" from the burn pits, but that assertion was challenged by retired Lt. Col. Darrin Curtis, a biomedical sciences officer who took some of the air samples used in the report.

I love that the Pentagon continues to deny any and all problems with this war. On top of the fact that this creates just one more major health concern for our troops, how many civilians have been affected by this. While I am sure that some will argue KBR's behavior was simply irresponsible, I believe this borders on criminal. Knowingly burning all of those materials in close proximity to anyone... Its not like any one of those KBR employees could rationally think that was a good idea. A little bit of common sense and rational thought could have prevented this.

It amazes me that we can be in the 21st Century, and we are still surrounded by far too many people that are simply oblivious to the environmental consequences of their actions.

WTF! What do we teach in school? Is too much time spent on intelligent design debates against evolution? Too much time spent on abstinence only rather than basic biology? Too much time spent in class rooms to learn lessons rather than being exposed to the real word and it's natural systems? What do they teach in science classes these days?
