Nearly two years into the recession, opinion about which political party is responsible for the severe economic downturn is shifting, according to a new national poll.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Friday morning indicates that 38 percent of the public blames Republicans for the country's current economic problems. That's down 15 points from May, when 53 percent blamed the GOP. According to the poll 27 percent now blame the Democrats for the recession, up 6 points from May. Twenty-seven percent now say both parties are responsible for the economic mess.
Well maybe not "now" but it will be soon.
"The bad news for the Democrats is that the number of Americans who hold the GOP exclusively responsible for the recession has been steadily falling by about two to three points per month," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "At that rate, only a handful of voters will blame the economy on the Republicans by the time next year's midterm elections roll around."
That's how it goes though; if you want power during an economic crisis people will blame you if they don't see improvement fast enough. The question the White House needs to ask now is: can the economy pull out of this by 2012?
I'd give good odds on that happening.
The current prediction by the WH web-site is the deficit will double in ten years. Doesn't sound to me like there's any real effort being made to reduce it. None of us are stupid, you can't continue to spend and reduce anything. Americans can't spend what they don't have and by 2012, I think it will be even worse than it is now. With the Healthcare Bill, we will immediately begin paying for a program that won't even be available until 2013. This bill will cost the American people through increased taxes and mandates. Don't believe me, read the bill that is available on every Senators web-site.
You said it. Americans want victory early. Problem with Obama is this. His campaign was all about putting your faith and support behind the federal government and sitting back to watch the economy turn around, watch unemployment not get as high as it has gotten, watch a chicken fall in every pot. We were all told that only the federal government could turn this thing around, that the current level of spending was unsustainable, but that we needed to spend more in the meantime, and that that was the only way to avoid our current situation.
Basically, in my mind, he may as well have told the American people that he had a time machine. When everyone gets excited about the prospect, when it comes to the moment we need the time machine to save us, Obama pulls back his cuff and announces, "8:55".
Obviously, they promised the moon, people bought in, people found out that they could not produce the moon, people got upset, reasonably or not.
I agree, the economy will turn around by 2012, but not by the hands of the government, but by the efforts of the people. Which, in my opinion, is what they are banking on anyway. All the stimulus and faux tax credits are nothing but smoke and mirrors. If it turns around, "hey, see, we told you we would get it done." If it looks like we are headed for more, "well, the people aren't spending enough." Thanks Pres.
