John McCain May Not Be Senator For Long - Former GOP Nominee Faces Dead-Heat Primary Challenge in 2010

advertisement

A new Rasmussen poll finds that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) could potentially be in trouble with Republican voters back home in Arizona, where he's often faced criticism from the right for his views on immigration.

In a potential Republican primary for his 2010 re-election, the 2008 GOP nominee for President is in a dead heat with former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, a hard-line conservative who lost his seat in the 2006 Democratic wave.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

To me this is remarkably significant. McCain is a powerful Senator and the willingness of the GOP's rank and file to just jettison him spells trouble for the unity that has characterized the Republican party for the last quarter-century.

this could also indicate another move to the fringe in the GOP. also mccain is a decent guy, replacing him with hayworth is a bad move

Hayworth's name being bandied about is a bad move for the nation. His nickname in D.C. wasn't "Foghorn Leghorn" for nothing.

He's a caricature of the overgrown, overaged fratboy that is the recipient of all the easy connections, eager backing by the Arizona Republic, fawning over by the hardliners in the G.O.P., and he's about 4 years behind the curve.

No matter. He's outdated, overweighted, loudmouthed and wrong.

McCain will retain his seat easily in AZ. Unless Palin comes to town........
