Obama Will Host National Science Fair - ""Scientists and engineers ought to stand side by side with athletes and entertainers as role models, and here at the White House we're going to lead by example."

advertisement

And today, I'm announcing that we're going to have an annual science fair at the White House with the winners of national competitions in science and technology. If you win the NCAA championship, you come to the White House. Well, if you're a young person and you've produced the best experiment or design, the best hardware or software, you ought to be recognized for that achievement, too.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Hell-freaking-yea. Good on you Mr. President.

During the Cold War the White House took the initiative on physical fitness because having young people who were able to enlist in the military was a national security priority. Today we still need those physically fit young people, but we also need mentally fit young people as well. Our national security today depends just as much upon our brains as our brawn and it's high time the White House lionized those who set the gold standard for "smart."

What Killfile said.

About time we start promoting brains.

Killfile, you and I agree on very little in this world, but on this one we are in 100% agreement.

Brain Power! A cool slogan that some public figures, such as Glen Beck et al, would and should take as a personal insult.

The military and colleges were highly visible during science fairs when I was in school. The military was very interested in projects involving computers and robotics.

It will nice to see a science and other academic studies held in higher regard than in the past. Students need to be encouraged and applauded for their efforts.

I've always thought that there were better role models than athletes and "entertainers."

Can't wait to read how this will be spun into something negative. I don't mean to sound so negative but it happens so much you could create a drinking game from it.

This is a substantial speech by the president whose true colors shine through this topic. There is a seed that links to the video where the president is making that speech. It is a real pleasure to see him at work.

This is a positive decision and I support the President's position on science and math being equally (or even more) important as athletics and entertainment.

Let's qualify this. As long as the candidates are certain gender and race. What I mean is check college today. They are all in favor of scholarship and grants in the sciences and engineering. As long as the candidate is female and/or a protected class. Otherwise "up yours". i have a son that is caucasian. He accepted a position to do an extracurricular undergraduate research project sponserd by the ACS (American Chemical Society) after his professor had sought him ought for the position and talked him into it. He is doing this without compensation which is fine. If he was a female or a minority student he would have been compensated $5,000 per year for his work. Why??? Obama if he is sincere, should seek the best and brightest otherwise this program is another joke. There are few if any scholarship, grants for caucasian or asian males. Time to level the playing field. If you want to confirm this check into the University of Florida College of Engineering. Check out its leadership and scholarship programs. This is not an isolated situation either. Also consider my son was born in 198. Is he responsible for all the previous social ills of the world?

Funny, I don't recall seeing anywhere that candidates are limited as to gender and race, either in the qualifying contests or this fair. Can you point that out, anywhere, or was this just a barely-related derail attempt?

Well, at least starting in the mid 3rd Century AD.... yea. ;-)

Yes Kilfile forgive my stupidity for not proofing the document. I am just a human sorry. 1987. and sought. I am certainly not the super-human intellectual equavilent to you. i was simply trying to say that the best and the brightest are needed irregardless of race and gender. This is based on personal experience. I will not follow your seeds in the future becase i see you are a man of higher moral caliber then us mortals.

Seriously Dog_Blue, I think Killfile was just making a joke. Big deal.

I was curious how someone might turn this announcement into something bad. Nowhere does it say certain races or one gender will get priority. I'm sorry you've had such a bad experience, but that shouldn't cloud you on what appears to be a good move towards science and engineering. I think it would be great for society if intellectuals were idolized as much as athletes. Don't get me wrong, I love sports, but I think education is way more important in the grand scheme of things.

Please, lighten up. I suspect also that Killfile was joking. Learn to laugh at yourself...

As you turned the thread negative I would appreciate your not following any of my seeds in the future as well.
